Q34. Casc Study: Rcad the following paragraph and answer the questions.
(4)
Conservative and non-conservative forees

In nature we have various types of forccs. A force is said to be a conservative force if

work done by (or against) the force for moving aun objet from onc position to another
position depends on these two (initinl and final) points but is independent of other
factors like the nature of path followed or velocity ofobjeet. It is also found that work
done on an object agninst the conservative force prescnt there gets stored up as the
potential energy of the objec. When external constraints are removed, the stored
potential encrgy manifests itsclf as kinctic encrgy. If above mentioned conditions are
not fullilled then force is called a non-conservative fore.

(a) Give two exumples of conservative forces.

OWCr temperalurc, the heat lost by the hot body is cqual to the heat gained by the
colder body, provided no heat is allowed to escape to the surroundings. A device in
which heat measurement can be done is called a calorimeter. Matter normally exists
in threc states: solid, liquid and gas, A transition from one of these states to another is

The amount of heat per unit mass transferred dluring change of state of the substance
is called latcnt heat of the substance for the process. For exumple, ifheat is added to a
given quantity of icc at -10 °C, the tempcrature of icc increases until it reaches its
meling point (0 °C). Atthis temperature, the addition ofmore hcat does not increase
the temperature but causes the ice to mclt, or changes its statc. Once the entire ice
mels, adding more heat will cause the tcmperature of the water to rise. The latent heat
for a solid to liquid state change is called the latent heat of fusion (I.), and that for a
liquid-gas state change is called the latent heat of vaporisation (Lv).

(a) State the principle of calorimctry.

Define Latent heat of Vapourisation.
C)Calculatc the hcat required to conver 3 Kgofiec at -10°C kept in a calorimeter
to water at 0 °C. (Given: specific heat capacity of icc = 2100 JKg K-l, latent
heat of fusion ofice = 3.4x 105 Jkg).

Asphere ofaluminium ofmass 0.01 kg placed for sulicient time in a vesscl containing
boiling water, so that the sphere is at 100 °C. It is then immediately transferred to
0.1 kg coppcr calorimcter containing O.25 kg of water at 20 °C. The temperature of
water rises and attains a stcady state at 30 °C. Caleulate the specific heat capacity of
aluminium.

copper calorimeter is 380 J Kg K°").
