Characters:

Lucas: He is a tall and good looking guy. His physical appearance and ability to perform his role is
appropriate and accurate because viewers tend to believe that he is a real person instead of just being a
male character in a story. He has soft and well-modulated that viewers can easily understand especially
his pronunciation and accent with his nativity language. His action is always to secure the protection and
welfare of his dog. His role is to take care of Bella always and make her a talented and smart dog. In
terms of his acting, he shown his purpose of being a guardian and friend of Bella. He always does his
best to avoid Bella from danger.

Bella: Bella is a mixed-breed dog and the narrator of the novel. Bella is a sweet, kind, and
unfailingly loyal dog who feels, from puppyhood, an instant and unbreakable bond with her
owner, Lucas. Bella in this movie is not just a typically dog because absolutely she can
easily understand the happenings in her surrounding compare to other dogs. These
characteristics make the audience believe that she is different from other dogs. Bella as a
narrator, her voice was being soft that emotions are being expressed. Born among a cat
colony in an abandoned building’s crawlspace, Bella is thrilled with her new life with Lucas.
When Bella becomes the victim of a war being waged by Gunter against Lucas, Bella cannot
understand why she is being taken away and put into the pound. As a dog her action is
always to impress the audience for being smart and capable of doing different things. As the
main character, her role is to be an inspiration to the viewers that even though there are
problems at the end we can still overcome it. The story runs out when all she wants is to go
home to Lucas. Bella is freed from the pound, but taken to a foster family until Lucas and
Mom can relocate to a place where Denver County laws do not apply.

Mother-Cat: She is a cat with three colors and having kittens. She adopted Bella when her
father was pounded by the animal rescuer. She didn’t speak but the way she chatters; it
was very soft. Every time she saw Bella, she always wants to take a hug or kiss because
even though they are different animal, she treats Bella as a family. Her role is to soften the
heart of the viewer’s base on what she did with Bella. Her acting is incredible because she’s
not just a typical cat, she has a good heart and have a meaningful feelings compare to
other cat when she takes care of Bella.

Olivia: She is a pretty girl with curly hair and always having make up. She is the best friend of Lucas and
at the end they became husband and wife. She always supports Lucas especially with Bella. She is the
one who saw Bella when she was still puppy. Audrey’s voice is kind ‘a soft good accent. She may not be
always in the scene of the story but then she has a good acting and performance when she’s supporting
Lucas and Bella.

Gunter: He is personnel in the animal control. He is one of those who pound dogs. Gunter propose that
Pit bull is not allowed in the community because if will be pounded according to the law they said. He is
one of the antagonist in the story because even though Bella is not a pure Pit bull, but then he still wants
Bella to be pound.

Plot:

It’s about a devoted, homesick dog that goes on a treacherous journey across the American
heartland to be reunited with her owner. The plot of this movie is very believable because of the
transition between the relationship of the character and the conflicts. It is very interesting especially for
the viewers because they will not only be enlightened with the story but instead they will also learn a
good lesson. The climax of the story is revealed when Bella was being separated from Lucas, she soon
finds herself on an epic 400-mile journey to reunite with her beloved owner. The setting is in Denver
Colorado where Bella was started to be with Lucas, but the setting was changed when Bella was sent to
Farmington, New Mexico.

The movie started when Lucas Ray and his girlfriend Olivia, two residents
of Denver, Colorado, find a puppy in a construction site along with many kittens and a mother cat.
He names the dog Bella and takes her home to live with him and his mother, Terri Ray. Over the
years, Lucas plays with and takes care of Bella. However, Lucas also continues to feed the cats at
the old house, putting himself in the crosshairs of Günter Beckenbauer, the man who intends to
demolish the house. He even calls the city about the cats who live there, which delays the
demolition. Vengeful, Günter notifies animal control that Bella is a pitbull (despite not looking like
one), because in Denver, pitbulls are illegal, due to being a dangerous breed. That evening, an
overzealous animal control officer named Chuck comes by to warn Lucas that if he finds Bella on the
street, he will impound her.

The next day, when Bella gets out to chase a squirrel, Lucas catches up to her and prepares
to take her home, but Chuck confiscates Bella and takes her into the local animal shelter. Lucas
picks Bella up, pays a fine, and is allowed to take her home, but he is warned that if Bella is captured
again, she will be euthanized. To avoid this, Lucas sends Bella to live with Olivia's aunt and uncle
in Farmington, New Mexico, until he and his mother can find another home outside of Denver's
urban limits. However, Bella misses Lucas so much that she leaves Farmington and begins a 400-
mile journey home, which will take more than two years to complete. During Bella's journey, she
befriends a cougar cub, whom she names "Big Kitten." Bella and Big Kitten encounter many ordeals
together, including being hunted by a pack of coyotes, but a group of men help Bella and frighten the
coyotes away. The three men give Bella food at their campsite and upon learning who her owner is,
try to call Lucas, only to be scared away by the sudden arrival of Big Kitten. During the winter, Bella
helps rescue a man buried in an avalanche. Eventually, she reaches a small town, where she is
temporarily taken in by a homeless and mentally ill veteran named Axel until he soon dies of a drug
overdose. Back in the wilderness, Bella is attacked by coyotes again, but Big Kitten, now fully grown,
returns and intervenes, successfully fighting off the coyotes. At each place Bella goes, she learns
that each of her new friends has its own home, and how she must keep moving to get back to her
family.

After encountering further challenges, Bella finally makes it back to Denver, and she bids Big
Kitten farewell before they part ways. She reaches the city's VA hospital, where she joyfully reunites
with Lucas, Terri, and Olivia. Lucas prepares to take Bella to the vet to treat an injury Bella received
due to being struck by a car, but when Lucas, Terri, and Lucas's friends bring Bella outside, Chuck
arrives with several police officers, including police captain Mica. Chuck claims that he needs to
confiscate Bella again, with the threat to have Lucas and anyone who interferes arrested otherwise.
Captain Mica states that he enforces the law, which states that Bella must be impounded, but Lucas
and Terri stand up for Bella and explain that there is no reason to confiscate Bella as the VA hospital
is federal property, and thus it is not technically part of Denver. Captain Mica allows Lucas to keep
Bella as he has no jurisdiction. Chuck threatens to pull Lucas over if he sees Bella leave the
premises, but Captain Mica admonishes Chuck and pulls him from public field duty for his over-
zealousness and the number of complaints against him, then orders the police officers not to pull
anybody over just for a dog.

Lucas and Olivia are happy to see Bella again and finally manage to move into a house
in Golden, where they allow pitbulls. Meanwhile Big Kitten is revealed to be a mother herself now
and she and her cub watch over the city of Denver.
Technical Elements

Direction

I like how the director compromise the flow of the story because there are conflicts that make
the viewers being excite on how it will be solve. The pacing and speed of the movie is not that too
fast and also not that too slow because every scenario are being emphasized. The direction of this
movie is comparable to other movies especially those movies who has a character of animals. The
story telling is complex because they tend excitement for the readers, it only means that they are not
that kind straight to the point, they do something before revealing what will happen. There is certain
suspense that has been worked especially when Bella are having different adventures going back to
Lucas. The director creates a captivating conflict when Bella was being in danger because of many
wolf.

Cinematography

In terms of cinematography, the movement of camera is very accurate because it focuses on

the character. In camera angles it enables both characters to appear together in a single shot facing
the audience. It helps us identify with what’s going on and most of the time places us at eye-level. It lets
us feel like we’re really there with them and standing in the room next to them.

Sound

The sound of this movie was very interesting because its atmosphere provides audio continuity
between shots. The sounds establish the reinforcing of the mood especially for characters so that
viewers can feel also the emotion of the characters. The soundtrack relates to the story lines, themes in
terms of the Diegetic and Non Diegetic sounds because there are different sounds for every scene like
when mother dog is taken, when mother cat is on scene, and also when Bella began his journey going
back to Lucas. In this case, sounds are very important because it emphasize the emotions and highlights
of every scenario. In this movie they use different sounds for different characters, because it may help
the viewers to easily know the characteristics of a character. Moreover, it will greatly help to the theme
of the story. The atmosphere, dialogue, sound effects, and music work together to create sound design
because this movie will be boring if one of these elements is not included.

Camera Work

In camera work, they more focuses on the angle of eye level, and in terms of eye movement
they use panning because Bella as a dog it gives her more highlights and also for us viewers to easily
follow of what Bella is doing. In terms of shots, the movie tends to use mid shots but sometime they also
use close shots or long shots because it depends on the flow and how characters will a good emphasis.
The duration in the screen of this movie greatly intensify the excitement of the viewers because the
duration will depend on how intense a scene is.
