WHAT IS THE CRANIUM?
The cranium is conformed by the
bones that form the head. Is made
up of cranial bones (which protect
the brain) and facial bones (which
form the eye sockets, nose, cheeks,
jaw and other parts of the face).
ANATOMY OF THE CRANIUM
The human skull consists
of 22 bones that are
mostly connected by
ossified joints, called
sutures.

This is divided into the

neurocranium and the
viscerocranium. Their most
important job is to protect
the main organ of the
human being: the brain.

structure forming the trapezoid-shaped bone that

Cranial bone forming part
of the side and top of the

ANATOMY AND FUNCTION
SPHENOID:

The last 3 parts of the

cranium have the main
purpose of sustain, provide
stability and keep your head
up pretty much… we will deep
into it.
1. The “sphenoid” bone is one of the 7 bones
that conform the orbit structure.
2. It has the form of a bat or a butterfly.
Articulates with the frontal, parietal,
ethmoid, temporal, palatine, zygomatic, vomer
and occipital bones.
3. Helps to connect the neurocranium to the
facial skeleton.
ANATOMY AND FUNCTION
TEMPORAL:

As the base of the cranium it

is important to consider that
is the most delicate part of it
as well, even if it is covered
by muscle. 1. Provides structural support for the skull,
while protecting the cerebrum of the brain
and surrounding membranes.
2. Surrounds the middle and inner portions of
the ear.
ANATOMY AND FUNCTION
ETHMOID:

Last but not least…

This small part located
between the eyes has an
important role in the nasal
cavity but it is also especially
1. Helps to form the walls of the eye
susceptible to fractures socket, or orbital cavity, as well as the
roof, sides, and interior of the nasal
cavity.
2. Very light and sponge-like in texture, the
ethmoid bone is one of the most complex
bones of the face.

1. How is the cranium formed?
2. Mention the three parts of the cranium bones?
3. How many bones does the cranial base has?
4. How many bones does the human skull consist?
