HOME WORK

1 a. Define the term resistance and state factors affecting resistance of

conductor.
b. Give three method of measuring resistance.
2 a. State Ohm’s law for electrical conductor.
b. Give two examples each of (i.) Ohmic conductors (ii) Non-Ohmic
conductors.

Answer 1

a) Resistance is defined as the opposition to the flow of electrical current through

a conductor measured in ohms with symbol as Greek letter omega (Ω).
Factors that affect resistance:
o Temperature
o Length of wire
o Area of the cross-section of wire
o Nature of the material
o Conductivity of the material

b) Three methods of measuring electrical resistance are

i. Ammeter-Voltmeter
ii. Ohmmeter Method
iii. Direct-Deflection

Answer 2
a) Ohm´s Law states that: "In metallic conductors at a constant temperature and in a
zero magnetic field, the current flowing is proportional to the voltage across the ends
of the conductor, and is inversely proportional to the resistance of the conductor."
b) Resistors are Ohmic while semiconductors are non-ohmic. Examples of ohmic
conductors are silver, copper wire, metals while the examples of a non-ohmic
conductors are light bulb, diodes and transistors Difference between Ohmic and non-
Ohmic conductor: Ohmic conductors obey Ohm's law whereas non-ohmic
conductors don't.
