1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Course name: Introduction to BA. in English for Science and Technology
Course code: FL3061
Credits: 2 (2-1-0-4)
Theory: 45 class hours (24 face-to-face class hours and 21 online class hours)
Prerequisite(s): None
2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The aim of this course is to provide students with general knowledge of English for Science and Technology
and study skills including academic skills together with soft skills for higher education. The students will self-
study and do in groups various activities such as forums, assignments, coursework, quizzes, and others
throughout the course.
3. COURSE OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES (LOs)
Upon completion of the course, students are able to:

5. ASSESSMENT
Details of two main assessment instruments are as follows in the table:

(*) Each student explains and illustrates step-by-step the searching
and validation of one 300-word source of group presentation in
a Microsoft word assignment and submits it to HUST_LMS.

assessment Students will do a written quiz on note-making skills in 90
minutes. They will annotate and highlight two 200-300-word
paragraphs of a source on a familiar topic and write an 60-80-
word summary of those two paragraphs.
A2.2. 30 Week 14
Coursework - Coursework 2 (Groupwork): Plan group presentation
No. 2 Each group of 5-6 students will prepare a plan of a group
presentation and will present that plan in 15 minutes including 1-
2 minutes of Q&A session. Each group member orally introduces
his/her part in the plan in 2-3 minutes using 2-3 PPT slides. After
that, the whole group will answer questions by other groups’
members. Members of other groups will listen and take notes of
the introductions. The PowerPoint slides and individual notes of
the plan group presentation will be submitted to HUST_LMS by
Week 15.
(*) Attendance score is based on the regulation of Hanoi University of Science and Technology: + 1pt: no
absence; 0pt: 1-2 times of absence; -1pt: 3-5 times of absence; -2pts: at least 6 times of absence. Attendance
is assessed online and face-to-face: online attendance based on students’ completion of activities in Week 1-
16 on lms.hust.edu.vn and attendance in face-to-face classes from Week 1-16.
6. TENTATIVE TEACHING SCHEDULE
FL3061 course length: 3 periods/lesson x 15 weeks = 45 class hours. Online class hours on LMS: 50%; F2F
class hours: 50%; every two weeks students have three f2f periods.

7. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- Students need to complete online activities in each unit on LMS within 3 weeks.
- HUST attendance scoring will be given on the completion of online activities on LMS and offline ones in
face-to-face class. Students MUST complete AT LEAST 70 % of all online activities on LMS to obtain
HUST attendance scores and have on-going assessment results recorded. Online activities on LMS are unit
tutorial videos, forums, assignments, quizzes, or questionnaires/surveys.
- Students need to do online and face-to-face activities following the tentative weekly teaching schedule to
achieve the best results. The sequence of online and face-to-face activities depends on the purpose of
blended learning and time schedule of those activities. Students will do online activities BEFORE face-to-
face activities in Week 3, 7, 11, 13, 14. They will do online activities AFTER face-to-face ones in Week 1, 2,
4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15.
