Answer each question completely. You may need to use your textbook, the class notes or any
diagrams provided.

1. In some of Mendel’s work with Pea plants he produced hybrid plants by crossing a
purple flowered plant with a white flowered plant. All of the F 1 offspring plants had only
purple flowers. What two conclusions did Mendel draw from this cross?( 2 points)

The purple flower is dominant.

The white flower is recessive.

2. What are the different expressions of a gene called? (1 point)

Trait
genotype

3. If a zygote has two different alleles for a trait, which allele will be expressed? (1 point)

The dominant one and if there's no dominant allele then it will be recessive.

4. What does the phrase true-breeding mean? (1 point)

Physically expressive traits.

Like the color of the eyes.

5. What does Mendel’s principle of dominance tell us about how alleles are expressed? (2
points)

If there is a dominant one then it will show up. The only way that you can get a
recessive one is if both are recessive.
Dominant does not mean that it will be better.

6. If you were to cross a tall pea plant with a short pea plant and you got only tall plants as
a result, what can you infer about the alleles in the parent plants? (3 points)

The alleles of the tall plant are dominant and the alleles of the short plant are
recessive.
