BWMS Code:
BWMS means any system which processes ballast water such that it
meets or exceeds the ballast water performance standard in regulation
D-2. The BWMS includes ballast water treatment equipment, all
associated control equipment, piping arrangements as specified by the
manufacturer, control and monitoring equipment and sampling facilities.

Performance standards of ballast water in accordance with regulation D-


2 can be met through treatment systems with mechanical methods
(filters, heating), using UV and using active subtances and can be done
with a combination of methods.

The reference guidelines in fulfilling regulation D-2 are:


1. G-8 for BWMS (only need to get approval from Administration)
2. G-9 for BWMS using active subtances (need to get approval from
Administration and IMO)
Until now (December 2022) there have been 62 BWMS that have received basic
approval from IMO, of which 47 BWMS have received final approval from IMO.

Indonesia, as one of the countries that has ratified the BWM Convention, is obliged to apply the rules contained in the convention
and the amendments derived from the convention.

New ships (built on or after 08 Sept 2017)

08/09/19 must apply the D-2 method.

The D-1 method can only be applied to vessels with


an IOPP certificate inspected before September 8,
2019, with a BWM certificate validity period of 5 years
after the inspection.

The use of BWM D-1 certificates is no longer valid


internationally if the ship is inspected for IOPP after
September 8, 2019

Currently, Indonesia is one of the Lead Partnering Countries in IMO's


Technical Cooperation program in the MEPSEAS - CME (Compliance,
Monitoring, and Enforcement) program for the implementation of
the BWM Convention, which will serve as an example for other
countries on the implementation, monitoring and enforcement of
BWM Convention
