ENERGY RESOURCES

1.0 Brief Introduction

The term energy resource refers to any material that can be used as a basis or source of
energy. Energy resources are used to generate electricity and other forms of power for human
use. There are two kinds of energy resources - Renewable Energy Resources and Non-
Renewable Energy Resources. Renewable energy is energy supplied from natural
inexhaustible sources and non-renewable energy is energy supplied from sources that exist in
a limited amount on Earth. Some examples of Renewable energy resources are hydro, wind,
solar, biomass, geothermal etc. and of non-renewable energy are coal, petroleum etc.

ENERGY RESOURCES

0.1 Brief description

Energy is the capacity to do work and is required for life processes. An energy resource is
something that can produce heat, power life, move objects, or produce electricity.
Matter that stores energy is called a fuel. Human energy consumption has grown steadily.
throughout human history. Early humans had modest energy requirements, mostly food and fuel
for fires to cook and keep warm. In today's society, humans consume as much as 110 times as
much energy per person as early humans. Most of the energy we use today come from fossil
fuels (stored solar energy). But fossils fuels have a disadvantage in that they are non-renewable
on a human time scale, and cause other potentially harmful effects on the environment. In any
event, the exploitation of all energy sources (with the possible exception of direct solar energy
used for heating), ultimately rely on materials on planet Earth.

 Role Of Energy Resources In Environment.
Renewable technologies are considered as clean sources of energy and optimal use of these
resources minimize environmental impacts, produce minimum secondary wastes and are
sustainable based on current and future economic and social societal needs. Sun is the source
of all energies. The primary forms of solar energy are heat and light. Sunlight and heat are
transformed and absorbed by the environment in a multitude of ways. Some of these
transformations result in renewable energy flows such as biomass and wind energy.
Renewable energy technologies provide an excellent opportunity for mitigation of greenhouse
gas emission and reducing global warming through substituting conventional energy sources.
In this article a review has been done on scope of CO2 mitigation through solar cooker, water
heater, dryer, biofuel, improved cookstoves and by hydrogen.

 Example of Energy resources:

 Biofuel energy.
 Hydropower.
 Geothermal energy.
 Solar energy.
 Nuclear energy.
 Tidal energy.
 Wind energy.

 Type of Energy resource:

 Renewable Energy resources.
 Non- Renewable Energy resources.
Renewable Energy resources
A renewable energy source means energy that is sustainable - something that can't run out, or is
endless, like the sun. When you hear the term 'alternative energy' it's usually referring to renewable
energy sources too. It means sources of energy that are alternative to the most commonly used non-
sustainable sources - like coal.

 Advantages of renewable energy resource

1) Renewable energy sources will not run out.

2) Renewable energy technologies can be used on small or large scales - e.g. one house
or an entire wind farm.
3) Renewable energy sources are clean to use as there are fewer greenhouse gas
emissions.
4) Solar panels are cheap to maintain
 Disadvantage of renewable energy resource

1) Hydroelectric systems can harm environments and wildlife.

2) A lot of land is required to set up large scale systems to make enough electricity.
3) The technology required is often expensive to purchase.
4) Not all places in the world can make use of renewable energy sources.
Non- Renewable Energy resources
Non-renewable energy resources include coal, natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy.
Once these resources are used up, they cannot be replaced, which is a major
problem for humanity as we are currently dependent on them to supply most of our
energy needs.

 Advantages of non-renewable energy resource

1) These resources are easy to use whether in a home or anywhere else.

2) Huge profits can be generated in the mining of coal, selling of oil or the construction of
natural gas pipelines.
3) Consumers can find non-renewable resources at a very cost-effective price.
4) Most of the non-renewable sources are also quite easy to store.
 Disadvantages of non-renewable energy resource

1) Non-renewable energy can be dangerous and can cause respiratory problems in humans
because sources like fossil fuels emit gases such as carbon monoxide.
2) The workers working in coal mines or oil drills are more prone to a number of health risks.
As a result, there are a large number of diseases, injuries and even deaths.
3) One of the major disadvantages of non-renewable energy is that it is time-consuming. Mining
of coal, searching for oil,
4) Sources like coal, oil and natural gas release a large amount of carbon dioxide when burnt. As
a result of these chemicals, they are rapidly destroying the ozone layer.
 Role Of Energy Resources in Human Health.
Energy use is central to human society and provides many health benefits. But each source of
energy entails some health risks. This article reviews the health impacts of each major source
of energy, focusing on those with major implications for the burden of disease globally. The
biggest health impacts accrue to the harvesting and burning of solid fuels, coal and biomass,
mainly in the form of occupational health risks and household and general ambient air
pollution. Lack of access to clean fuels and electricity in the world's poor households is a
particularly serious risk for health. Although energy efficiency brings many benefits, it also
entails some health risks, as do renewable energy systems, if not managed carefully. We do
not review health impacts of climate change itself, which are due mostly to climate-altering
pollutants from energy systems, but do discuss the potential for achieving near-term health
benefits by reducing certain climate-related emissions. Expected final online publication date
for the Annual Review of Public Health Volume 34 is March 17, 2013.
