Sime Darby Deploys Workday for HR Transformation For Improved Employee Experience
Workday announced that Sime Darby has successfully deployed Workday Human
Capital Management (HCM) in six countries across Asia Pacific. Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei,
South Korea, Japan, and the Maldives are now live on Workday HCM with a further 13 countries
being progressively rolled out.

Sime Darby is embarking on a human resource (HR) transformation journey to streamline and
simplify over 100 processes and systems at the group level. With operations across the Asia Pacific
region and a workforce of approximately 22,000 employees, the multinational needs an agile,
holistic HR system that provides a complete overview of employee data and transactions anytime,
and from anywhere to support its global growth strategy. The organisation was looking for a
solution to replace complex legacy systems and provide real-time data to help enable efficient
decision-making.

By shifting to a cloud-first approach on a unified system that includes Workday

Journeys, Workday Payroll, and Workday Cloud Connect for Learning, Sime Darby is
streamlining business processes to enhance employee experience and facilitate employee
collaboration across its various divisions and at all levels.

Employees are now able to easily access multiple HR systems and functions, including leave
applications, pay slips, and online learning courses from the convenience of their personal mobile
devices or laptops. In addition, managers can leverage real-time data analytics to make smarter,
more informed decisions regarding talent management. As an organisation that always puts its
employees first, Sime Darby has set out to effectively transform its human capital systems through
a phased approach that strives to enable a better employee experience as part of a positively
engaged workforce.

“Our employees are our greatest asset, and we recognise that HR transformation is a key tenet of
our digital transformation journey in order to stay competitive and relevant amid a dynamic
business landscape,” said Roselaini Faiz, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at Sime Darby.
“As we continue to deliver on our five-year Value Creation Plan, we are excited to be partnering
with Workday to enhance our employee experience and improve HR processes at an enterprise-
wide level. With the power of technology, we strive to create a collaborative and immersive
organisational culture where all our employees are empowered to thrive in their roles.”

“Faced with the headwinds of a distributed workforce today, organisations need to build greater
business agility, so they can adapt quickly to unforeseen changes,” said Sandeep Sharma,
President, Asia at Workday. “Workday is proud to be a technology partner for rapidly expanding
businesses such as Sime Darby to elevate its human capital management amid the changing world
of work. With an optimised talent management agenda in place, Sime Darby employees are also
well-equipped to navigate the opportunities and challenges in their transformation to become a
future-ready workforce.” (Source : businesstoday.com.my, Cynthia Ignatius, October 5 2022)
Answer the questions below. Provide the example based on the case study given.

QUESTION 1 (8 MARKS)
Discuss the environmental pressures and internal organizational changes factors that trigger
changes in Sime Darby.

Human Resources
- Over 220,000 people work for Sime Darby's corporation globally. To ensure that all employees
are prepared to handle any challenges they may encounter in the future, constant training is given
to all of them as encouragement to build effective improvement. Depending on their varying skill
levels, all of Sime Darby's employees participate in a range of training sessions. The various
training programs will assist them in maintaining their skills and knowledge while also assisting
them in managing their existing tasks or improving their productivity to handle more challenging
ones. Additionally, Sime Darby offers training to its employees in order to help them improve
their work quality as well as expand their expertise and network.

Functional Resources
- Excellence is Sime Darby's primary emphasis value, and it stands for the organization's
aspirations. Sime Darby is making great efforts to realize their objective, which would enable the
firm to provide best-in-class services and goods. The entire Sime Darby group has put in this
endeavor. Sime Darby is held in high regard by all of the stakeholders, thus they must create
something that exceeds their expectations. SimeDarby should continue to be competitive on a
global scale.Regarding the final two important characteristics, "Enterprising" and "Integrity,"
Sime Darby needs to be quick to come up with new ideas and honest in order to gain the trust of
its customers. The value must be reached by taking calculated risks.

Technological Capabilities
- Technology is a factor in Sime Darby's organizational reforms. The corporation is a sizable one
that was formed by the merger of three significant Malaysian businesses. To develop your
technological competencies, join joint ventures and learn from your well-established partners in
your respective industries. For instance, Sime Darby purchased 60% of C.E Crest Engineering
(M) Company, which offered engineering and construction services to the petroleum industry,
when the company wanted to enter the sector. Another instance of the organization's expansion
into agro-genetic engineering is when it teamed up with the International Plant Scientific
Institute, a California-based business that specialized in the research application of genetic
technology to tropical crops.

Organizational Capabilities
- The Board must designate at least four members to the governance and audit committee (GAC),
which must have at least four members. All GAC members must be non-executive directors, with
the majority of them being independent directors. The Malaysian Institute of Accountants
membership requirement or any other requirement specified in the requirements must be met by
at least one member of the GAC. No other substitute Director may be nominated to the GAC. The
key duties of the GAC include reviewing financial reporting and performance oversight,
monitoring GCAD and the controls environment, governance oversight, dealing with external
auditors, related party transactions, audit committee reports, and share issuance policies.
