NAME OF THE SCHOOL :

CLASS : IX

SUBJECT :BIOLOGY

TOPIC : CARBON CYCLE

DATE :

DURATION :

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The students recognize different forms of carbon in carbon cycle.

The students understand the meaning of carbon cycle.

The students understand the steps involved in carbon cycle

The students understand the meaning of calcination and limestone.

MATERIAL REQUIRED

Classroom apparatus,chart of carbon cycle.

PRE-REQUISITE

The students have already know about some essential elements.

ENGAGE

The teacher asked the student to write down any essential elements of life and were given 3
minutes to think and write down in a piece of paper. Then , the teacher called out 3 students
randomly to write on the board what they have written down on their on their paper.

1. Can you tell me what elements is carbon, oxygen
found in all living things?
2. When we breathe air, what do we Carbon dioxide
released?
3. Where is carbon dioxide found? Atmosphere
4. Do you think carbon dioixide is Yes/no
important for life?

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE TOPIC : Today we will learn about carbon cycle.

EXPLAIN

SL.NO Teacher’s activity Student’s activity

1 Carbon is found in different forms on
earth.

Can you tell me the elemtal forms of Diamond and graphite

carbon?

Yes, also carbon in its combined form

exist
 as carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere.
 as carbonate and hydrogen
carbonate salts in various
minerals.
 as proteins,carbohydrates,fats
,nucleic acids(DNA , RNA)

2 The teacher shows a chart of carbon Photosynthesis

cycle and asked the students the steps of Food chain
carbon cycle. Respiration
Decay
Combustion
Exchange of co2
3 How do plants make food? Photosynthesis
4 During photosynthesis,green plants utilize
co2 from the atmosphere to form
carbohydrates ( glucose, sucrose,starch,
cellulose etc)and other organic
compound which are food for plants.
So , photosynthesis is the major process
by which carbon is brought from the
environment into the living world.
5 Who consumed plants? Animals

Can you tell me how animals are Herbivores , carnivores , omnivores

classified depending upon food taken?
6 Yes , plants are consumed by animals.
The herbivore consumed plant, obtaining
a major supply of carbon . carnivores in
turn consume herbivores and so on. Thus
, all animals obtain carbon from green
plants.

This step is known as food chain , are we Yes sir

all clear?
7 When we breathe, what gas do we Carbon dioxide
released?

This exchange of oxygen and carbon

dioxide is called respiration.

Respiration is a process by which living

organism exchange gases between their
body cells and the environment.

So in this step , carbon is released back

as co2 in the environment by plants and
animals through respiration.

8 When plants and animal die, what will They will decay
happen?

So the decay plants and animal released

carbon dioxide and this will return to the
environment.

So this step is deacy.

9 The remains of plants and animals that
are not released back into the
atmosphere becomes fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are the fuels such as coal or

oil or natural gas that is formed from the
decayed remains of plants and animal.
These fuels are used by man for
heating,cooling,transportation and
industrial processes. On combustion
these fuels released co2 in the
atmosphere.

This step is combustion.

10 The last step is exchange of gases.

Do you think carbon dioxide is present in Yes/no

water ?

Yes, it is present in dissolved state in

water and there is exchange of co2
between water bodies and the
atmosphere.

Some of this dissolved carbon dioxide

gets converted into calcium carbonate in
the form of limestone.

The teacher shows a picture of limestone.

Limestone on calcination released co2

into the atmosphere.

Calcination in simple words can be

described as the process of heating some
solid materials in a controlled
environment.
11 This cyclic process of carbon from the
atmosphere to the earth and back to the
atmosphere is called carbon cycle.
