WHAT IS YOUR INTENTION?

(Identify author’s intention for writing- to persuade. EN7 RC-IIIg-9)

STEP 1: WARM-UP
Task 1: Analyze the ff. paragraph.
Vaccines are the treatment that helps the human body produce an immunity against
certain diseases. Most people in the US have gotten some kind of vaccination in their life and
routinely get check-ups. But some people in the US have not gotten vaccines at all because of
their parents not getting vaccines for them or because they don’t believe that vaccines actually
work. Parents and adults also think that the ingredients might harm them or the child, or even
give the child a genetic disorder. Getting vaccinated is essential to human beings. It provides
protection to the body against many deadly diseases. Vaccines are great for protection against
diseases…(Should Vaccines be Required...) Ellen Clayton, MD, JD, Professor of Pediatrics
and Law at Vanderbilt Law School summarized the results of the report "The MMR
vaccine does not cause autism...” (Should Vaccines be Required.) Along with other diseases
that people think can happen if you get a vaccine.

Parents think that the ingredients are dangerous and that the possible side effects are worse than the
disease itself. The thing they don’t realize is that their decision to not vaccinate their child is affecting
everyone who will be around them. Having a child at school who is not vaccinated will put all the other
children who did get their vaccinations at risk and that is not fair to them.
Why is it that some people don’t want the government interfering with their medical
decisions? The government is doing it for a reason. They want to keep everyone safe and healthy, and
they want to stop major outbreaks of preventable diseases from ever happening again. All children
should be required to get vaccinations and continue to get them throughout their life in order to
prevent future outbreaks of diseases and protect everyone that will be around them.

What have you observed about the articles? Focus on the

underlined phrases/ sentences. What do you think is the intent of
each author in writing their work?
Answer _______________________________________________

STEP 2: MODELLING

Now, let’s move on to the second type of author’s purpose as evident in the
given paragraphs above. The second purpose why an author writes is TO PERSUADE. A
persuasive text written by an author is a form of academic text that aims to convince
readers for a point of view backed by sound logic and strong evidence. It is almost
equivalent to a lawyer presenting his side of a case to a jury, giving facts on not only why
his opinion is correct, but also proving why the opposing point of view is incorrect.

Now, remember, the term sound logic is most frequently used to

describe whether or not an argument is valid and has true premises,
thereby guaranteeing the truth of its conclusion. Strong evidence means
that the author can support his writing with lots of facts based on
research and statistics.

Authors writing to PERSUADE seek to include hard

evidences and statistics to convince you and agree with
his point of view.

Authors will also use “ EMOTIVE LANGUAGE” which means certain word choices are
made to evoke an emotional response. Emotive language often aims to persuade you to share
the writer or speaker's point of view, using language to stimulate an emotional reaction.

Example 1. Getting vaccinated is essential to human beings. It provides protection to the body
against many deadly diseases. ( paragraph 1 )

Authors will also use “ CALL TO ACTION” which means an invitation to perform a desired
action.

Example 2. All children should be required to get vaccinations and continue to get them
throughout their life ( paragraph no.2 )

Authors will also use “RHETORICAL QUESTIONS” that will force the readers to think and
take action in support of their stand
Example 3. Why is it that some people don’t want the government interfering with their medical
decisions?

STEP 3: GUIDED PRACTICE

Directions : Read the given paragraph and answer the questions that follow.

The Coronavirus Vaccination. A solution to something we have been dealing with for a year
and three months. In this large period of time, there were many different, but necessary, changes to
millions of lives. With these changes, there have been people who either wish for normality again, or
people who want to stop seeing so many sick Americans. If you are one of these people, the
Coronavirus vaccine would be the most reliable answer to your wish. Though we are currently not
eligible in the US due to our ages, when we are eligible in the near future, it would be in our best
interest, and America's best interest, to receive this vaccine!

By Anna Alonso

1. The author would most likely DISAGREE with which of the following statements?
a. Many families wish for normality again.
b. Covid vaccine is eligible for all ages.

You should also keep in mind that there is a conscious factor to getting
vaccinated. When you receive it, you are quite literally saving others from getting sick.
You are being mindful of millions of people who are at risk of getting the virus. It shows
the consideration you have for your parents’ lives, grandparents’ lives, friends’ lives,
teachers’ lives, the list goes on and on. That is just how helpful getting vaccinated can
be. Over three million families around the world are mourning the loss of their loved

opportunity to stop these grieving families from multiplying.

1. Which method of development did the author used in this excerpt?

a. call to action
b. emotive language
c. rhetorical question

More than celebrities, we will need to make visible and legitimate a broad support
for the vaccination campaign. Such support also needs to highlight the processes that led to
the development and approval of the vaccines. Stories about the vaccination of everyday
people, combined with a communication on the individual and collective rationales for
taking the jab, can bring a perceptible majority on board. Once this threshold is reached, it
will serve as a powerful demonstration to convince the rest.

2. It is clearly understood in the paragraph that the author

________________.
a. believes celebrities will influence the people to get vaccinated.
b. demonstrates the process of vaccine development and acceptance.
c. wants to convince everyone to get vaccinated by all means.
