Summary
• Trees can be a valuable asset for properties and people
• Here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjnv_AevX4s&feature=youtu.be is a good YouTube Video
• Provide overview of benefits of trees to improve our environment and
our properties
• Provide some information and lessons learned (successes and
problems) on some example projects
• Provide information on irrigation and mulch of trees
• Club potentially could sponsor a tree planting project at some public
space (e.g., park)
• Potentially supported by a Rotary Grant
Trees are Supportive of a Rotary Area of Focus
• Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group
• Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group (ESRAG)
assists Rotary clubs, districts and multi-districts in planning,
implementing and evaluating service projects, building
awareness, and inspiring action. These projects promote
environmental sustainability, awareness of climate change, and
actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to mitigate
climate disruption. ESRAG promotes educational resources,
initiates dialogue about environmental sustainability, and uses
best practices in models and assessments for both projects and
daily choices. This work advances the Object of Rotary through
positive impacts in all six Areas of Focus.
Pine Tree Planting Project at Bastrop State Park

• The Bastrop 2011 files burned

most of the tress (including
unique Pines) at Bastrop State
Park and surrounding areas
• Replanting efforts are helping
restore the Park and other areas
Irrigation for Trees
• Planting Trees in Texas without providing for supplemental irrigation
can result in high levels of tree attrition especially until trees are fully
established
• Irrigation for trees requires different approach than for traditional turf
grass areas
Tree Planting Project at Ybarra and Kovar
Ranches on Hellinger Road, Flatonia Texas
• Planted a variety of trees (Oak, Cedar Elm, Bald Cyprus, etc.)
• Have mixed results
• Shows importance of irrigation: new trees died when not properly watered
• Planted 100 Pine tree seedlings as tree nursery pilot project
• Seedlings provided by Rotary eClub
Water is Essential for Trees (and plants)
• Proper irrigation and moisture control is essential for trees (and other
plants) especially until fully established
• Can use combination of irrigation and mulch
• Emitters and drip irrigation can be effective for trees (and other plants
especially when newly planted.
