Lesson Summaries

Day 1: Instructional Design Defined

Instructional design definition, types of IDOL jobs, skills required and the traits of
people who do well in this career. This lesson will help you define the type of IDOL
you want to become so you can target your portfolio to help you land your dream
job.

Day 2: IDOL Process & Models

To become an IDOL you'll need a foundation in our process and models we use to
create corporate training. This lesson will cover cognitive load theory, the ADDIE
model, Action Mapping, Bloom's Taxonomy, Gagne's 9 events, Mayer's Principles
of Multimedia Learning, and the Learning Transfer Evaluation Model. Your goal
will be to describe a process or model in your own words.

Day 3: How to Design a Course

It's time to start the work of becoming an IDOL. And our work is the design and
development of training solutions. A training solution could be a short eLearning,
hybrid or instructor-led training course. In this lesson, you'll learn the
fundamentals of creating a course in a business setting. You'll then take action
and create your first course design document.

Day 4: Course of 1000 Faces

Once you have a course design document you can create several pieces of
content for your portfolio from this same course. I call this the course of a
thousand faces. You'll be exposed to the common free tools and strategies you
can use to create content.

Day 5: Deliberate Practice

Deliberate practice always follows the same pattern: break the overall process
down into parts, identify your weaknesses, test new strategies for each section,
and then integrate your learning into the overall process. Deliberate practice
through feedback from experienced IDOLs is the key to accelerating your success
and achieving your goal to become an IDOL.

IDOL Process & Models
Today we covered cognitive load theory, ADDIE, Action Mapping, Bloom's
Taxonomy, Gagne's 9 Events, Mayer's Principles of Multimedia Learning, and the
Learning Transfer Evaluation Model. Below are some links for more information
about each. And of course, you can do your own research. Your assignment is to

Deliberate Practice is
Key to Becoming an IDOL

DAY 05
YOUR 3 STEP FORMULA TO GET
ACTIONABLE FEEDBACK

1
CURRENT SITUATION
1
Let those that you are sharing your work with
know where you are and what it is that they
are reviewing. For example, I completed my
first draft of a job aid for how to use a Trello
Board.

DESIRED SITUATION
2
Let others know where you want to be. What
does getting unstuck or the right feedback do
for you? For example, I want to get feedback to
improve the look and overall visual design of
my job aid. I also want the language in the job
aid to be crisp and concise.

QUESTION
3
Give the reviewers a question to answer about
your asset. For example, do you think this color
palette is appealing? Does the language in the
copy easy to read? Is it clear what people
should do?
