Reading by itself has been shown to be an effective technique to increase general knowledge,
mental abilities, and even emotional intelligence. While all of these benefits still apply to
individuals who read only for leisure, entertainment, and relaxation, it has been shown also that
critical readers also gain an advantage from reading. Reading critically does not mean being
critical of what you read. Critical Reading is a type of language analysis because it entails a
deeper examination of the text and the arguments, ideas, and themes that are conveyed.
Critical readers paid attention to the context in which a text was written as well as the
information it presented and what it said. In order for me to read critically, I must identify the
central points or purpose of the text. A critical reading makes an effort to recognize and evaluate
how these central claims are presented and supported. After that, start to make some
judgments about context of what I have read such as "Who is the text's designated
readership?”, “Who is it speaking with?”, and "In what historical setting was it written?”. The next
step is to identify the various types of reasoning used in the article, such as the idea used, any
theories utilized, how the data is organized and construed using any concept or theory
approach, and the processes the author used to analyze the material. I have to examine the
evidences like the supporting facts, examples that the text employs. Analyze the supporting
details, illustrations, and other forms of proof that the text uses. An argument cannot be made
without supporting evidence, thus take into account the types of evidence used like what
sources are used to assemble the evidence? Are these primary or secondary sources? Lastly, it
involves evaluation.
