This study explored the gossiping culture of the people in

Boljoon, Cebu, Philippines. This exploratory research analyzed the
qualitative responses from the key Informants. Decisions and
choices of young people are somehow affected by the fabricated
stories about them while the adult informants are generally used to
being the subjects of gossiping. Both groups agreed that gossiping
is a norm in the rural community. It has an enduring psycho-
emotional effect on the adolescents since they develop mistrust,
anxiety and lack of self-confidence. Gossiping is mostly prevailing
among the adults especially the elderly women. For these people,
they do not consider it gossiping but a discussion and sharing of
information about the life of their neighbors, acquaintances and
even friends. Therefore, gossiping has become a norm in rural
communities. It affects negatively to young people while it has no
bearing on the adults. Adults feel that they are entitled to spread
gossips for their satisfaction while the younger informants feel like
they are always the subject of the gossiping and they are not
happy about this norm.
