I. Introduction
The issue of global warming has been rapidly becoming more detrimental due to the
holistic pollution of the Earth. One of the major causes of global warming is the
instantaneous production and waste of plastic. A billion single-use plastic bags are
used every year in supermarkets, fast food restaurants, and retail establishments
because of their outstanding use, resource efficiency, and low cost. (Verghese, 2006)
The printing of plastic is the second reason for the significant environmental impact
towards the depletion of the ozone layer, the extrusion process being the first.
(Morales-Mendez & Silva-Rodrigue, 2018) As an alternative, a number of Philippine
localities have begun to ban the use of plastic bags as packaging materials in favor of
paper bags for trash management and disposal purposes. (Biona et al., 2015)

However, even the normal production of paper provides environmental issues. In the
previous 40 years, there has been a 400% increase in paper use leading to a large
number of trees being cut down for the usage in the paper industry. The production
and waste of paper also contain the deleterious risks of dyes, inks, and other harmful
chemicals that contribute to the land, water, and air pollution. (Delos Santos, 2019)

Natural fibers are being investigated to produce paper in which their process does not
contain harmful chemicals as a safe alternative for the environment. The Sansevieria
Trifasciata (snake plant), also known as Mother in Law’s Tongue, is a diverse plant in
the Philippines that can be found growing as weeds along the roadsides, waste areas,
gardens, and such. It is an easy plant to grow that does not require high maintenance.
(Abian et al., 2019) The fiber of the Sansevieria Trifasciata possesses little elongation,
high strength, and fineness. The fiber can be used to create products like paper, sacks,
ropes, handicrafts, mattresses for beds, and other larger applications of textiles
because of its better strength, affordability, and renewable source. (Kant & Alagh,
2015).

This study investigates the possibility of the snake plant’s fiber being an alternative
paper bag. The researchers provide a comparison of the alternative paper bag made
from snake plant fiber and commercial paper bags. The study supplies data of the
viability rate of capacity, longevity, and versatility of both the alternative paper bag
and the commercial paper bag.

III. Thesis Statement

People mostly use plastic bags for groceries or on a daily basis. However, we know that
plastic bags are harmful to the environment as these are non-biodegradable substances
which we use everyday. In addition, a single plastic bag can cause harm to our health as
it produces plastic fumes when it is scorched. The researchers use snake plant fibers to
make an alternative paper bag. This product is eco-friendly and will help to lessen the
usage of plastic bags as it aims to:

- reduce the effects of pollution brought by vast number of wastes scattered

across the environment.
- produce any alternative products that can contribute to environmental
cleanliness.
- promote environmental-friendliness by reducing plastic wastes.

IV. Problem Statement

Environment issues such as pollution, global warming l, extinction of ocean life are some
effects of toxic fumes released by a plastic bag. Paper Bag made from Snake plant fiber
could be a good alternative for plastic bags. Paper bags are easier to recycle and because
they are biodegradable, they can be used for purposes like composting. This study is the
utilization of snake plant (sansevieria tifascata) fiber as alternative paper bag. Snake
plant can absorb cancer-causing pollutants including CO2. Also, Due to it's greater
strength, the fiber is useful to make products like socks, ropes and handicrafts. This
alternative paper bag is fully an organic material as the snake plant have components to
3

absorb and remove harmful toxins. The objective of this study is to determine the
feasibility of snake plant fiber as alternative paper bag.

Research questions:

Furthermore, it seeks to answer the following questions;

1. What is the viability rate of snake plant fiber as alternative paper bag in terms of;
2. 1.1 Capacity
3. 1.2 Longevity
4. 1.3 Versatility
5. 2. What is the viability rate of commercial paper bag in terms of;
6. 1.1 Capacity
7. 1.2 Longevity
8. 1.3 Versatility
9. 3. Is there a significant difference between the viability rate of alternative paper bag
made from Snake plant fiber and the commercial paper bag?

V. Literature Review
This chapter consists of all necessary related literature and studies which contain gathered
facts and readings that are relatively significant to the proposed topic that was gathered
through intensive search which strengthens the quality of the study.

"A thick - skinned succulent, it can go for weeks without watering and endures some
overwatering as well as dry air and low light". According to Armstrong, W.P. (2010) that
"Sansevieria trifasciata are composed of clusters of fiber cells associated with the
numerous vascular bundles".
4

According to Fiber plants (2010) that "people have been using plant fibers for thousands of
years in order to make clothing, rope, paper etc. Whilst all land plants contain fibers they
are usually too short or too weak to be used for anything other than paper-making, but
there are well over 100 species suitable for growing in temperate climates that produce
long and relatively sources have been used by man for many generations and there is
increasing interest in the potential use of such fibers from non-tree sources for various
applications. The various methods for processing fibers into valuable industrial raw
materials are detailed along with some prospective new technologies. The reading above
are related to the present study since fibers and Snake plants are used as the raw materials.

Paper bags are gaining importance as these bags are 100% reusable, recyclable and
biodegradable and at the same time environment friendly and pose less threat to wildlife. It
requires less energy for paper bags to be recycled than plastic bags. Paper bags have come
a long way since their beginnings in the mid-eighteenth century when some paper bag
manufacturers started developing paper bags that are more hardy and long lasting. The
paper bags are generally box-shaped in design that allows them to stand upright and hold
more goods. Corporates are using paper bags for promotions, seminars, product packaging
and branding purposes.

By selecting high quality paper bags, manufacturers can deliver recycled brown color paper
bags in big and small quantities, regular and premium paper bags which add a professional
touch that consumers love and appreciate. Besides, you can add your own custom brand to
any paper bag to promote your business. Read on to discover the importance of paper bags.

1. Plastic bags cause environmental damage such as increasing the level of air pollution.
Plastic bags not only have adverse effects on our natural habitats, death of many animals.
Plastic bags are not renewable and you need UV rays to destroy them, which is harmful for
the environment.Paper bags on the other hand are environment friendly and can be
recycled.

2. Paper bags are usually made from wood. So, these bags can be produced into a new
paper like newspapers, magazines or books. Waste papers are also biodegradable so they
can be easily degenerated and do not pile up on dump sites
3. You can also buy them at a very cheap price particularly if they are bought wholesale.
And etc.
