THE RELATIONSHIP OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF MABHAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF S. Y:2017-2018

Chapter 1

Background of the Study

Academic Performance of the student is base on effective communication of the teacher towards the
students. The field of communication changes all segments of society and the importance of
communication studies is a necessary and an essential component. In the communication process the
information, sends appropriate feedback through the channel once more and, the process repeats itself
(Adler, Rosenfield and Procor, 2010). Communication is used to describe the process of exchanging of
information. Encarta Dictionary (2010) defines communication as the exchange of information between
people, by means of speaking, writing, or using a common system of signs or behavior. Other senses in
which communication is described are: message: a spoken or written message; act of communicating:
the communicating of information; rapport: a sense of mutual understanding and sympathy and access: a
means of access or communication, e.g. a connecting door.

Communication is a very important skill which means the written and oral transmission of common
understanding. It is a skill that is critical to success in every field, but it is crucial to teachers who must
achieve results through the behavioural changes exhibited by learners. Effective communication
involves the most accurate sending and receiving of information, full comprehension of the message by
both parties and appropriate action taken upon the completion of the information exchange (Terry and
Franklin, 2005).

Through time effective communication students can learn to acquire the right skills, and their ideas,
concept, and initiative can be shaped by communicating effectively that the learnings they got frim the
teachers are absorbed and positively they apply what they have learn from the class.

We choose this kind of study, because we wanted to know the relationship of academic performance of
the students and the communication skills of teachers been used and also we have seen how the
students response when it comes to their academic performance inside the class. Investigating and
conducting this kind of topic may help to formulate better solution that is effective and make the
students to be good in academic performance through the communication skills applied by the teachers
to them.
Significance of the Study

The outcome of the study has a great value in helping the students and teachers in the said school where
we conducted the research. To students, they will know what are the right things to do when in it comes
to their academic performance . To teacher, it will provide additional knowledge on what tactics to use
for communicating effectively to the students. Enable the public teachers and students to understand the
effect of Teachers communication skills on the academic performance of students in Mabuhay National
High School.

The findings from this research will help to fill the gaps of the study which exist between
communication and academic performance and will be able to predict the basic communication skills
needed in order to achieve a high performance academically.

Scope and Delimitation

The study population includes the 10 students randomly selected per grade level in Mabuhay NHS. The
sample size is 60 students. Determine the relationship of communication skills of the teachers and
academic performance of the students based on the survey and questionnaire used in this research.

a working knowledge and better understanding of the study.

Academic performance- the response of students in a specific subject or lesson they discuss and also
how the students behave by he communication strategy use to them by the teachers.

Communication Skills- ability to give or express information through verbal and non-verbal way of
transporting messages. Passing of information from one person to another.

LOCAL

INTERNATIONAL

Teachers’ Communication skills have been tipped to have an important influence on students’ academic
achievement and at the same time play a crucial role in educational attainment of the students. This is
because the teacher is ultimately responsible for translating policy into action and principles based on
practice during interaction with the students (Afe 2001). Both teaching and learning depends on teachers
and their ability to communicate subject matter without so much confusing of the students: no wonder
an effective teacher has been conceptualizes one who produces desired results in the course of his duty
as a teacher (Uchefuna2001). Communication in its very basic form is the transmission of messages
between two parties or more.

Communication is said to be a natural occurrence in the daily life of each individual.

The research of Gage, Berliner, Porter, and Brophy (cited in

Lumanta, 2008) emphasized the importance of the teacher in

providing a climate conducive to learning. Santrock (2006) emphasized that effective teachers have

good command of their subject matter and a solid core of teaching

skills. They have excellent instructional strategies supported by

methods of goal setting, instructional planning, and classroom

management. They know how to motivate, communicate, and work

effectively with students with diverse backgrounds. They also use

appropriate levels of technology in the classroom. In the present

study, the teachers’ teaching skills include subject matter

competence, instructional strategies, classroom management, communication, motivation, and

evaluation and remediation

procedure.
