Two perfect loves, nor lets them
My love is of a birth as rare close; As lines, so loves oblique may well
As 'tis for object strange and high; Their union would her ruin be, Themselves in every angle greet;
It was begotten by Despair And her tyrannic pow'r depose. But ours so truly parallel,
Upon Impossibility.
Though infinite, can never meet.

And therefore her decrees of steel

Therefore the love which us doth
Could show me so divine a thing (Though love's whole world on us
bind,
Where feeble Hope could ne'er doth wheel)
Not by themselves to be embrac'd; But Fate so enviously debars,

But vainly flapp'd its tinsel wing.

Unless the giddy heaven fall, And opposition of the stars.

And earth some new convulsion

And yet I quickly might arrive
tear;
Where my extended soul is fixt, And, us to join, the world should all
But Fate does iron wedges drive, Be cramp'd into a planisphere.
And always crowds itself betwixt.
