Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense is the second of the diNcult tenses in English, and it’s used to talk about the past of the past! It’s a
little diNcult to understand so my goal here is to break it down and give a simple introduction.

The Basics
Past Perfect

Subject + Had + Past Participle Verb (3rd Verb)

I had eaten soup

Past perfect is used with past simple to express something that happened before the past simple.

I arrived after he had left.

He left Jrst, then I arrived (both in the past)
