ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

First and foremost, we would like to thank Allah the Almighty, for giving us the strength and
capacity to complete our project within given time.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to the
completion of this FYP report. Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the unwavering support
and guidance provided by our supervisor Mr. Shaukat Ali Sheikh, Assistant Professor NED
University of Engineering & Technology, whose expertise, encouragement, and constructive
feedback have been instrumental in the successful completion of this project. His
encouragement, motivation, patience, insightful support and guidance helped us understand
the dynamics of our project and our course of action over the period.

We would also like to extend our sincere and deepest gratitude to our Industrial Advisor Mr.
Mahmood-ul-Hasan for his continuous support for our project. We would also like to thank him
for providing us with the much-appreciated data required to carry out our design verification,
whenever requested. Furthermore, we would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Lotte
Chemical Pakistan Ltd., for giving us this project as our FYP.

Finally, we would like to express our appreciation to our family and friends for their endless
encouragement and unwavering support throughout our academic journey. Without their
support, this project would not have been possible.
STATEMENT OF CONTRIBUTION

The completion of this FYP report was the culmination of the collective effort of all team
members, and each member has made a significant contribution towards the success of this
project.

Muhammad Nadeem Hashmi was responsible for the design verification process, which was
crucial in achieving the determination of correct diameter of pipeline at suction and discharge.
Muhammad Hamza Saleem was responsible for the determination of pipeline material and
schedule no. of the pipeline, which played a critical role in selecting the appropriate grade of
material. Syed Naquish Hussain Shah contributed in gathering the properties of different
materials and their availability in Pakistan, which will prove vital in the making of BOQ (Bill of
Quantities).

In addition to their specific contributions, each team member also played an important role in
the planning, design, and execution of the project. They regularly attended project meetings,
provided feedback and suggestions, and collaborated with each other to ensure that the
project was progressing smoothly and effectively. Furthermore, each team member played an
active role in collaborating and communicating with one another, sharing their expertise, and
collectively working towards the successful completion of this project.

Overall, the contributions of each team member were essential in ensuring the success of the
project. Their collaboration, hard work, and dedication played a significant role in achieving the
project's objectives and producing a high-quality FYP report.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Pipeline Engineering is a vast field consisting of surveying, routing, hydraulics, mechanical

design, valve selection etc. Our concern and objective were mainly the mechanical design of
pipeline which LCPL (Lotte Chemical Pakistan Limited) intends to lay from Jetty to its new plant
site. This pipeline will be capable to handle 5000 tons/day of Paraxylene. We also have to
include the design of all necessary auxiliaries to facilitate transfer of Paraxylene in a safe and
efficient manner. The project setup includes retaining one Paraxylene tank of capacity 10,000
tons at Jetty to unload Paraxylene parcel and constructing adequate pumping and pigging
facility at Engro Vopak site but we have covered other aspects such as hydraulic analysis in this
report as well.

In the first half of the report we have provided an overview of pipelines, the scope of the code
ASME B31.4, the different terms as defined by the code, the types of pipeline systems, the
factors involved in pipeline material selection etc.

In the second half, we discuss the different grades of materials which are used for underground
piping and then we have provided our justification for the selection of a certain grade for our
FYP pipeline design project.

And finally, we have concluded the report by discussing the different aspects of mechanical
design of our pipeline i.e. thickness, line sizing, equivalent length of pipeline.
