D A T E . M a c h a b e y (1955b, 2:27) notes the s i m i l a r i t y o f the b e g i n n i n g o f the tenor a n d cantus
o f 1. 8 and the o p e n i n g o f the Lay de Confort, S'onques (L17/12) and suggests that both the
b a l l a d e a n d the l a i dated f r o m the same p e r i o d . H e is m o r e p r e c i s e later ( 2 : 5 7 ) , c i t i n g
H o e p f f n e r ' s note to 1. 2 2 4 9 o f the Confort ( 1 9 0 8 - 2 1 , 3:249), w h i c h indicates that the l a i
m u s t date from the same perio d as the dit a n d is indeed the same l a i referred to i n Confort as
the Lay de Bon Espoir. Nevertheless, after c i t i n g a counter e x a m p l e (see b e l o w , note o n the
date o f Nes qu'on [B33]), M a c h a b e y admits that conjectures c o n n e c t i n g l y r i c s w i t h specific
