Port Overview
The Port of Tema is the largest port in Ghana. Situated on the eastern coast of the country, it stretches over 3.9 million square metres of land area. The
port receives an average of over 1,650 vessel calls per year. These comprise container vessels, general cargo vessels, tankers, Ro-Ro and cruise vessels
among many others.

85% of Ghana’s trade is done through the ports with shipping routes and vessel calls to and from all continents through both direct and transhipment
services. Set within the industrial city of Tema and 30 km from the capital city of Ghana, the port’s environs serve as a logistic point for activities of Inland
Clearance Depots (ICDs), warehouses, transport and haulage companies, freight forwarders, factories and related service centres.

Maritime Services Ltd undertakes shore handling services for non-containerized cargo, excluding dry, liquid bulk and vehicles in addition to inland

Port Performance
Tema Port occupies a land area of 3.9 million square metres and is flanked by an industrial city. The port receives an average of over 1,650 vessel calls
per year and these comprise an assortment of container vessels, general cargo vessels. tankers, Ro-Ro and cruise vessels, amongst many others. The
Main Harbor entrance has a minimum depth of 12.0; when vessels roll on entering, this increases their draft. The entrance is 244 meters wide, with a
dredged channel of 80 m wide. The bottom of the harbor consists of sand and mud, with frequent hard, rocky ground.

Berthing Specifications
The port has 12 berths and two others: one dedicated oil berth and the other operated by the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO). The minimum and
maximum depths range from 8.0 to 11.5 meters respectively.

The port only has two deep-water berths of 11.5 m for which there is frequent congestion. The port often lightens vessels and shifts them to the shallow
draft berths. The port has 12 berths located on two quays with a total paved quay apron of 2,196 m².

The port requires advance notice of 72 hours prior to the estimated time of arrival (ETA) – before 14.30 on Monday to Thursday and before 10.00 am on

The Tema Port provides container handling facilities via a dedicated container terminal managed and operated by a private company, Meridian Port
Services (MPS). The terminal which consists of berths 1 and 2 has a quay length of 575 metres with the following facilities: 3 Ship to shore gantries, 4 yard
gantries, 2 Mobile Cranes, Reach Stackers, 272 reefer plug points and a six lane gate complex. The Golden Jubilee Terminal (GJT) is an inland clearance
depot (ICD) located on the western end of the Port of Tema. The facility spans an area of 97,412 m2 and comprises a container freight station (CFS), a
state warehouse, car park and an open area for un-stuffing and storage of containers, banking services and customs and security services.

GJT provides receipt storage and delivery services. It is the only terminal responsible for receiving and delivering vehicles imported in containers and
provides this service in tandem with full container loads FCL, less than full container loads LCL and house-to-house receipt and deliveries.

Customs Guidance
The Ghana Revenue Authority, Customs Division is the statutory body established to collect, account and protect customs, excise, other assigned tax
revenues and facilitate trade across the country’s borders. F

The shipping lines, Destination Inspection Companies, CEPS, Clearing Agents, all work as chain of groups within a set of procedures and accompanying
documentation in order for cargo to be cleared through the port.

The shipping lines bring in cargo and release requisite documents to agents i.e. a. invoice b. parking list c. freight receipt.
The destination inspection companies authenticate the documents and thereafter issue a final certificate of valuation report (FCVR). Stating the
value of the consignment and the duty payable.
CEPS undertake valuation of certain category of items and ensure that the correct duty is collected.
GPHA facilitates the physical clearance process and ensures collection of rent and handling charges.

1.3 Ghana Customs Information

Terminal Information

Multipurpose Terminal
The Multipurpose Terminals Ghana Ltd. (M.T.G.) is a 3.85 acre site offering a full range of Container Terminal Services in the Port of Tema. Situated within
the Port Area at Industrial Area A/3/A, Fishing Harbour Road, Tema, Ghana, M.T.G. is within easy reach of MPS.

Grain and Bulk Handling

A terminal is to be constructed at the Tema Harbour to facilitate the import and export of agricultural products. The project, to be funded by Super
Maritime, a private local company, will be undertaken in partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). Work on the project, to be
executed at a cost of US $10 million, is expected to begin in January 2016 and be completed within eight months.

Main Storage Terminal

Tema port has 77,200 m2 of paved area for the storage of containers, steel products and other conventional cargo. The closed storage area, which is
about 25,049 m2 (2.51 hectares), consists of six (6) sheds with a total storage capacity of 53,000 tons of cargo. There are various private storage and
warehousing facilities located around the port, within the port city and beyond. A bonded warehouse of 2,108 m2 managed by the GPHA’s Golden Jubilee
Terminal (GJT).

Stevedoring services are provided by the Port Authority and 10 private stevedoring companies. GPHA controls 25% of all stevedoring. The remaining 75%
is performed by the following private companies:

Hinterland Information
The road is most common transport mode from the port to delivery points. One of the main associations operating at Tema port is the Joint Association of
Port Transport Unions or JAPTU which membership includes executives of transport associations like the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, the
Organisation des Transporteurs Routiers du Faso (OTRAF), Entrepôts Maliens au Ghana (Malian warehouses in Ghana), and the Niger truckers’ union,
among others.

Port Security
Tema port has been ISPS compliant since July, 2004 and is operating at MARSEC level 1. All port installations are manned by 24-hour CCTV surveillance
plus security personnel who monitor all port zones including entrance and exit gates on a 24-hour basis.
