VALLETTA: 35.54 N. 14.31 E. (See Plan)
DOCUMENTS: On arrival the Master has to fill the Pratique Deposition,
Stores List, Crew Declaration, Passenger List, Cargo Manifest and Crew
List (two copies). The forms for the Pratique Deposition and for the Stores
List are supplied by the Customs Boarding Officer.
Arrival Notice: In accordance with Ports Regulations 1966 and the
Dangerous Cargo - Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and
Bunkering Regulations 1996, the Master or Agent of a vessel should
give the ETA to the Ports Directorate on a form prescribed by the
regulations as early as possible prior to arrival and 72 hours in the case
of vessels carrying petroleum or other hazardous cargoes.
PILOTAGE: Pilotage is compulsory for vessels above 500 g.r.t. Pilots
for Valletta and Marsaxlokk board vessels at respective pilot boarding
areas, weather permitting. Pilots available round the clock all the year
round. In bad weather, Pilots may board vessels inside the harbor
entrance, subject to size of vessels, Master’s knowledge of the port and
Master’s willingness to bring vessel inside the harbour.
Vessels are expected to communicate their ETA at the boarding station
at least 2 hours before arrival, and to re-confirm their ETA when they
are 5 miles off the harbour entrance. The pilot boat is called when vessels
are 2 miles off the harbour entrance.
The pilot boat is equipped with VHF Channels 12, 14 and 16.
ANCHORAGES: Anchorage in territorial waters and in other harbours
is prohibited unless expressly authorised by the Ports Directorate.
RESTRICTIONS: Minimum depth at entrance is 16 m. Nature of bottom

Berth No. 4 has the same depth of water and can take maximum
displacement of 25,000 tons.
Pinto Wharves 1 and 2: 264 m. long, depth 10 m.
Pinto Wharf 3: 160 m. long, depth 10 m.
Pinto Wharves 4 and 5: 250 m. long, depth 11 m.
These wharves are used mainly for cruise liners, naval vessels and
ferries.

Flagstone Wharf: 217 m. long, depth 12.0 m. Can handle bulk coal
carriers and tankers.
Magazine Wharf: Combined with Laboratory Wharf has total length of
440 m. Depth 12.2 m. – 15.0 m. The Kordin Grain Terminal is equipped
to handle bulk grain carriers up to 70,000 d.w.t. Capacity of silos
86,000 tons. Maximum discharge rate 1,100 t.p.h. Maximum loading rate
1,250 t.p.h.
Laboratory Wharf has a length of 220 m. with a depth of 12 m. Two
other small berths adjacent to the main wharf are used for Ro-Ro and
direct deliveries.
Fuel Wharf has a length of 145 m. with a depth of 9.0 m. and handles
direct deliveries.
Gun Wharf has a length of 90 m. with a depth of 7.5 m. and is used
for ferry services.
There are other berths at Coal Wharf (length 110 m., depth 7.0 m.)
used mainly for direct deliveries.
Anchorage areas within Valletta Port are at Bighi Bay and Barriera
Wharf.
HEALTH: Port Medical Officer grants Pratique after boarding vessels
on arrival. Accelerated Pratique may be granted through Agent provided
crew are all in good health and ship has not called at any infected port
during previous 15 days. Disposal of swill is to be carried out only under
the direction of authorised Health Officials.
VHF: The Palace Tower Signal Station may be contacted on VHF
Channels 11, 12, 14 and 16 on call sign ‘‘Valletta Port Control’’.

TUGS: Tug Malta Limited, which operates a fleet of 6 tugs, provides all
tug assistance in the harbours and territorial limits of Malta on a 24 hour
basis, 7 days a week. Lines are given at the discretion of the ship’s
Master under the advice of a Pilot.
BERTHING: Berthing conference held at the Ports Directorate daily at
1000 hrs. between Monday and Saturday when berths are allocated for
expected ships. No specific requirements necessary. Once berth has
been allocated by Ports Directorate vessels can berth at any time at the
allocated berth (container and Ro/Ro berths are available).

Working Hours: Agents may order work according to one of the following
three options:
(A) On a day’s basis, commencing at 0800 hrs. up to 1700 hrs., with
a one hour break from noon to 1300 hrs.;
(B) On a 14 hour shift basis: From 0800 hrs. to 1500 hrs. (day shift)
and from 1500 hrs. to 2200 hrs. (evening shift);

An extra allowance of LM 5.00 per head is payable to port workers
engaged on night shift duties, and LM 10.00 per head for duties on
Sundays and public holidays.
MEDICAL: Notice must be given to Agents as early as possible. Hospital
facilities available. Crew must be in possession of inoculation/
vaccination certificates.
TANKERS: Vessels for Valletta Port must be gas-free or fully inerted
and only when bound for a repair facility, except for the tank cleaning
berth. Vessels carrying dangerous petroleum may enter Marsaxlokk
Harbour to discharge or load petroleum products (See ‘‘Marsaxlokk’’).
FRESH WATER: Limited amount ex-barge or roadtanker subject to
permission from Water Authority. Notice, as long as possible required.
FUEL: Available. Grades handled include gas oil, fuel oil, thin fuel oil
30 cST up to 380 cST.
Bunkering may be carried out by barge or at the supplier’s installation.
Bunkers may also be supplied at any of the 5 anchorage areas available
off the coast of Malta.
FIRE PRECAUTIONS: Precautions as laid down in Ports
Regulations 1966 and Dangerous Cargo - Ships, Marine Terminals and
Facilities and Bunkering Regulations 1966. Civil tugs partly equipped
with firefighting equipment together with Civil Protection Department.

Travelling Repair Parties:
Malta Dry Docks Travelling Repair Parties are available to carry out
repairs at sea both as an emergency repair, or as a means of reducing
lay-up time during normal voyage repairs or classification surveys.
It is possible to shorten the time of refits by employing a travelling
repair party to commence work before entering or complete after leaving
the Dry Docks, non-critical items being completed on passage.
Malta allows the maximum use to be made of Travelling Repair Parties,
situated as it is in the centre of the Mediterranean, midway between
Gibraltar and Port Said. It is ideally placed on the shipping lanes between
the East and West and connected by daily air services to Europe and
North Africa.
Malta Dry Docks Travelling Repair Parties are equipped to carry out
the following work:
1. Repairs to main and auxiliary boilers, including re-tubing,
renewal of brickwork and insulation and fitting of new furnaces
in Scotch type boilers.
2. Overhauling and repairing deck and engine room auxiliary
steam and diesel plant, cargo systems and valves.
3. Repairs or replacement of cargo tank heating and stripping line
systems, in cast iron, steel or aluminium/brass.
4. ‘‘Metalock’’ cold repairs to castings by trained specialists.
5. Gas or electric welding to Classification Society requirements
for steelwork repairs and reinforcements.
6. Repair or renewal of electrical wires and cables.
7. Overhaul or installation of any electrical machinery.
8. Repair or installation of all navigational aids, i.e., radar, radio,
auto-pilots, gyros by qualified personnel.

Ricasoli Tanker Cleaning Installation:
The tanker cleaning installation at Ricasoli accepts cleaning for dry
docking, repairs and survey for upgrading tankers.
The jetty area consists of a 100 m. jetty, situated immediately inside
the Grand Harbour, and capable of berthing tankers up to 100,000 d.w.t.
at a maximum draft of 8.5 m. in 10 m. of water.
Tankers are assured of immediate attention on arrival from a trained
crew of tank-cleaning personnel. Work is continuous 24 hours per day
from the time of arrival of the vessel, together with a 24-hour security
watch.
1. Washing: The installation supplies hot wash water at a
temperature of 60␥C and a pressure of 14 kg./sq.cm. to operate
4 washing machines simultaneously, with a delivery rate of
30 – 34 t.p.h. The discharge of slops and/or ballast is at a
maximum of 1,200 t.p.h. Chemical cleaning is also undertaken
and Malta Dry Docks holds stocks of well-known chemicals.
2. Gas-freeing: The installation operates 3 compressors and 6 Meco
ventilators, together with trunking, are available for gas-freeing.
3. Steam Supply: This is available at the jetty when required. All
associated tank-cleaning equipment is available for ship’s use.
Full firefighting facilities are available at the jetty.
The installation also makes distilled water for sale to ships and a
separate line is available at the jetty for the discharge of this product.
The reception and treatment area incorporates reception tanks,
treatment tanks and an observation tank with separating baffles and oil
sump. In addition there is an oil storage tank and a distilled water storage
tank.
The boiler house accommodates 3 Scotch boilers with all associated
auxiliary equipment. The steam supply is extensively used in the plant
area for heating and treatment purposes. An evaporator-distiller is
incorporated in the Boiler House for the production of distilled water.
The whole area has been designed to be perfectly safe and is to the
standards laid down by the Institute of Petroleum Safety Codes for
Installations storing Class A Petroleum. Strict safety regulations are
applicable to the whole plant and the tank-cleaning crew has been
thoroughly trained in these matters.
