(5 marks)

c) Define volumetric, mechanical and thermal efficiency

(5 marks)

d) Discuss torque concept and the measurement method practiced in internal

combustion engine application
(5 marks)

Question 2

a) A four-stroke engine produces 160 Nm of torque and displaces 2000 cm3.

(10 marks)

i. Calculate the mean effective pressure, IMEP of the engine.

ii. Calculate the indicated power when the RPM is 3600
iii. Calculate the maximum brake power at 5400 RPM and BMEP 0.844 MPa.

b) A 4-stroke internal combustion engine, with the following parameters.

l = 97 mm (piston stroke)
Bore = 85 mm
nr = 2 (number of crankshaft rotations for a complete engine cycle)
nc = 4 (number of cylinders)
Ti = 250 Nm (indicated torque)
Te = 230 Nm (effective torque)

Calculate the engine mechanical efficiency
