TikTok, the video social network with more than 800

million monthly active users, is currently valued at +50
billion dollars.

Created by Zhang Yiming, TikTok was launched in

China in September 2016 under the name Douyin. Just
three months after its launch it reaches 100 million
users in China. Following its success, it launches
globally under the name TikTok in 2017.

Bytedance, parent company of TikTok, buys the

famous video app musical.ly for 1 billion dollars in
November 2017. App that merges with TikTok in
August 2018.

Due to concerns of TikTok being used as a Chinese spy

tool, in August 2020, Donald Trump has signed an
executive order to ban TikTok in the United States
effective September 15. This has aroused interest from
large American companies such as Microsoft and
Twitter to acquire the company.
