ELEMENTS OF VISUAL ART

Elements Explanation (Where to be seen in the artwork?)

Line
A line is a mark created with a brush or a drawing instrument.
Thick, thin, horizontal, vertical, zigzag, diagonal, curly, curved,
spiral, and other varieties of lines exist, and they are frequently
highly expressive. Painters use lines as a fundamental tool,
however some artists use them more than others.

Shap
Shape A two-dimensional, flat, or height-and-width-limited piece
of artwork. Height, breadth, and depth are all included in the
volume (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Free-
flowing form is another option.

e
Form
Line, form, color, texture, and space are the five essential
components of an art work, according to the traditional method
of looking at art, especially the visual arts. Form, defined as a
three-dimensional alternative to shape, may be designated as a
separate category.

Value
One of the seven components of art is value. A color's value
refers to its brightness or darkness. Value is extremely essential
to art because we see and comprehend items based on how
dark or bright they are.

Color
Through the examination of works by Monet, Matisse, and
Kandinsky, students will be exposed to one of the essential
components of art: color. Students will learn how painters utilize
color to communicate ambiance and emotion via a class
discussion focusing on these paintings.

Space
Apart from the fact that it exists solely in connection to
something or someone, the definition of space leaves us with
nothing to hang on to in terms of its qualities.

Textu
Students will learn about texture, one of the most basic
components of art, by identifying different types of textures in a
variety of works of art.

ELEMENTS OF MUSIC
Elements Explanation (Where to be seen in the artwork?)
For our purposes, a workable definition of music would be:

Pitch
music is a deliberately structured art form that uses sound
and silence as its medium, with basic components of pitch
(melody and harmony), rhythm (meter, tempo, and
articulation), dynamics, and timbre and texture qualities.

Duratio
A note can last as little as a second, whereas a symphony
might span over an hour." Duration is important to meter
and musical form and is one of the fundamental
characteristics of rhythm, or encompassing rhythm.

n
Dynami
Volume (amplitude) refers to how loud, soft, or medium
something is as it gets louder or softer (crescendo,
decrescendo). Tempo refers to how fast, medium, or slow a
piece of music is played or sung in beats per minute.

cs
Tone
brief introduction to the fundamental musical element
known as "color" or "timbre." Color, or timbre, is one of the
fundamental components of music (pronounced "TAM-
ber").

Color
The framework of a musical piece is known as musical form.

Form
The phrase is commonly used in two senses: to describe a
conventional kind, or genre, and to describe the methods in
a particular work. The different musical formal kinds'
nomenclature might be defined by the medium of
performance, composing technique, or function.

Texture
A flat, contained region of an artwork formed by lines,
textures, colors, or an area enclosed by other forms such as
triangles, circles, and squares is known as a shape in the
visual arts.

ELEMENTS OF DANCING
Elements Explanation (Where to be seen in the artwork?)

Moveme
Movement can also be improvised, which means the
dancers create it up "on the fly" while dancing. In contrast
to axial movement, which happens in a single location,
locomotor movement refers to movement that occurs in
space.

nt
Body
The dancer's body is the dynamic figure or shape that
others perceive and feel. As the dancer moves in position
or moves through the dance area, the body remains
relatively static at moments and changes at other times.

Space
The dancer's body travels through space, which is referred
to as space (general or personal space, level, size, direction,
pathway, focus).
Time The movement of dancers through time, especially in
connection to the music, pace, meter, or rhythm, is
referred to as time.

Energy
The way in which movement happens is referred to as
energy. Energy options include variations in movement
flow, as well as the application of force, tension, and
weight.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Elements Explanation (Where to be seen in the artwork?)

Balance
Objects, colors, texture, and space have a balanced visual
weight distribution. If the design is a scale, these
elements should be balanced to make it feel steady.

Contra
Contrast may be described as a contrast between two or
more components in a composition in the context of
visual design.

st
Empha
The portion of the design that draws the viewer's
attention is called emphasis. Typically, the artist would
contrast one region with another to make it stand out.
The size, color, texture, and form of the region might all
be different.

sis
Movem
Movement is the path the viewer's eye takes through
the work of art, often to focal areas.
Such movement can be directed along lines, edges,
shape, and color within the work of art.

ent
Pattern
A pattern is a design that repeats itself by using the same
lines, shapes, forms, or colors. A motif is an element of a
design that occurs again and over again. The two types of
patterns are regular and irregular patterns.

Rhyth
Rhythm in design refers to interval-repeating
elements. An agreed elements location creates a
sound structure.

m
Unity
The objective of the design component unity is to
develop parts that complement one another and work
together to achieve a shared goal. It's all about not
sending out mixed messages.
