Subject 1
Seven sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from sentences a-h the one that best
fits each gap. There is one extra sentence you don’t need:

a. The three men disappeared one night and were never seen again.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz is a small, rocky island in the San Francisco Bay. 1 __ Ii is isolated and surrounded by icy cold
waters with dangerous currents. It was first a military fortress, but by the end if the 1860s the army
realized it was an ideal place for putting dangerous prisoners. 2__
The cells were very small. Each cell measured just 1.5 metres by 2.7 metres. 3__ Each cell had a small
sink and toilet, and a narrow bed. Prisoners weren’t allowed to talk to each other much, and there were
strict rules with harsh punishments for those who broke them.
In spite of the difficulty of getting from the island to the mainland, there were many attempts by
prisoners to escape. 4__ Twenty-three men were recaptured, six others were shot and killed during their
escape, and two drowned trying to swim across the bay. 5__ The Hollywood film Escape from Alcatraz
tells the story of three of those men. Clint Eastwood played the part of real-life prisoner Frank Morris,
who, along with two friends planned a very clever escape over seven months. 6__ The police looked
for them for years but nobody knows what happened to them.
7__ After all, if someone had managed to escape from Alcatraz, they would want to reappear and tell
the world about it somehow!
