PERFORMANCE TASK OF GRADE 11 – STEM

PRECALCULUS & GENERAL MATHEMATICS

1st QUARTER OF S.Y 2022-2023

PERFORMANCE TASK:

MAKING A SCALE MODEL SUSPENSION BRIDGE

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The learners are able to:
PRECALCULUS: Model situations appropriately and solve problems accurately using conic sections and
systems of nonlinear equations.
GENERAL MATHEMATICS: Accurately construct mathematical models to represent real-life situations
using functions, formulate and solve real-life problems involving rational functions; and apply the concept of
inverse functions, exponential functions and logarithmic functions to formulate and solve real-life problems
with precision and accuracy.

TRANSFER GOAL: The learners will be able to independently use their learning to accurately create a useful
and effective scale bridge model from recyclable materials to model real world phenomenon using the concepts
of conic sections for them to become innovative, creative critical thinkers and problem solvers.

TARGET 21st CENTURY SKILLS: Productivity and Accountability, Responsibility, Creativity and
Innovation

AUTHENTICITY: Architecture and Engineering

Materials:
 Recycled materials

Procedure:
 Draw a plan for a suspension bridge on the coordinate plane that includes two square supports, at least
one cable from support to support on each side of the road, and as many hangers as the group feels
necessary to attach the road on the cables.
 Answer the following questions:
1. How tall and wide are your supports?
2. What are the coordinates of the top of your supports?
3. What is the equation of your parabolic cable?
4. How many hangers are you using on your bridge between the two supports?
5. What are the coordinates of your every hanger from the vertex?
 Using recyclable materials, build a suspension bridge with their calculated values.

Definition of terms:
a. SUSPENSION BRIDGE: The type of bridge in which the deck is supported by vertical cables
suspended from larger cables that run between towers and anchored in abutments at each end
b. SUPPORTS: The towers of the bridge.
c. SPAN: Distance between two towers on suspension bridge.
d. CABLE: Runs from tower to tower and connects to hanger.
e. HANGER: Connects the cable to the roadway of the bridge.

kilometers connecting San Francisco Bay and
Pacific Ocean.
