GRAMMAR REVISION

1. Present tenses : Present Simple / Present Continuous / Present Perfect

1. Every day, John wakes up at 6 o’clock, has breakfast at 7 o’clock and leaves
for work at 8 o’clock.
2. I have had the same car for more than ten years.
3. Thomas is an author. He writes mystery novels and travel memoirs.
Altogether, he has already written seven novels, three collections of short
stories and a book of poetry.
4. In the last hundred years, travelling has become much easier and very
comfortable.
5. Sharon loves travelling. She goes abroad almost every summer.
6. Right now, Jim is reading the newspaper and Kathy is making dinner.
7. My parents come to visit me every Christmas.

10. Jack has been my friend for over 20 years. We have known each other since

2. Past tenses : Past Simple / Past Continuous /Past Perfect

1. Was Katie’s purse stolen at the party last weekend ? (=passive)


2. Yesterday afternoon, James was painting the front door while his girlfriend
was lying in the sun.
3. Jane is very good student. If she didn’t go to school, she wouldn’t be able to
read and write. (=2nd Conditional).
4. Rich fell of the ladder two days ago and he broke his ankle.
5. I bought this watch two weeks ago.
6. Rebecca didn’t feel very well last night because she hadn’t eaten anything all
day yesterday.
7. Ben was watching TV when his girlfriend was talking on the phone yesterday
at 6 p.m.
8. When I was looking for my passport, I found this old photograph

10. How many books did Shakespeare write ?
11. They went to the cinema about an hour ago.

3. Future tenses : will / going to / Present Continuous

1. A : ‘I’m going (to go) to the cinema tonight to see Ice Age 3. Do you fancy
coming ?’ (=plan)
2. B :’Maybe. I’ll let you know.’ (=spontaneous)
A : ‘All right. We’re leaving at 7 p.m.’ (=arrangement)
3. In 2050 there won’t be any trees left if people
continue to cut them down. (=uncertain prediction)
4. Waiter : Are you ready to order ?
Customer : Yes, l‘ll have spaghetti Bolognese, please. (=spontaneous)
5. A : ‘We’ve decided to repaint our living-rom’.
B : ‘Oh, have you ? What colour are you going to paint it ?’ (=plan)
6. It’s Jenny’s wedding next weekend. What are you going to wear ? (=plan)
7. A : ‘Remember to post the letter when you go out’.
B. : ‘Don’t worry. I won’t fotget. (=spontaneous)
8. I’m meeting Phil for dinner next Friday. (=arrangement)
9. Jane and Emilia are going for a swim at 10.00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

10. A : ‘I don’t know how to do this exercise.’
B : ‘Ok, l’ll show you.’ (=spontaneous)
11. Do you know Mark’s plan for today ? He’s going to wash his car this afternoon.
12. Did you remember to book seats ? – Oh no, I forgot. I’ll telephone for them now.
(=spontaneous).
4. Relative clauses

1. I gave you a book which had many pictures.


2. The stairs which lead to the celler are rather slippery.
3. Robert is going out with a girl (who) I don’t like. (who = object, I = subject)
4. The shop which sells really cool clothes is closed.
5. This is the guy who stole my mobile phone two days ago.
6. Do you like the song (which) they are playing on the radio ?
(which = object, they = subject)
7. The man who phoned me yesterday was a police officer.
8. John lives in a house which is not very big.
9. This is the boy whose mother is a famous actress.
10. Newquay is a seaside resort where people have a lot of fun.

5. The passive

1. The thieves were caught last night.


2. A window was broken by the children.

4. All the flights were cancelled.
