Key Properties

The key properties of neon include the following:

-It is a colourless, tasteless odourless inert gas

-It changes to reddish-orange colour in vacuum tube

-It is chemically inactive

-It has the lowest liquid range of any element

HISTORY OF NEON

Neon was first discovered by Morris Travers and William Ramsay in 1898 shortly after the discovery
of krypton in the same year. They both froze argon sample with the help of liquid air and slowly
evaporated argon under low pressure to collect the new gas. They applied a high voltage to a vacuum
tube placed with the obtained gas sample to observe the spectrum. Interestingly, they perceived a
brilliant glow, which had never been seen before. The scientists named the new gas neon, which
means "new" in Latin.

Neon uses

Due to the non-reactive nature of neon, it has wide applications in different fields. The uses of neon
are given below.

>It is used in electronics like voltage stabilizers, wavemeters and television tubes also.

>It is used for conduction lams as it emits reddish-orange light in its excited state.

>It is also utilized as a cryogenic refrigerant.

Is neon magnetic?

If the given molecule is responded to the earth’s magnetic field then it is taken as a magnetic
molecule. Let’s see whether the neon is magnetic or not.

Neon is diamagnetic i.e. non-magnetic as all the electrons are paired and they cancel out each other
magnetic field. Hence, neon does not produce an effective magnetic field of its own.
