Can Illinois Democrats Run Progressive
Messages and Win Local Elections?
G
overnor JB Pritzker told reporters
a few weeks ago that he was con-
cerned about some local school and
library board races.
“There are organizations that are
anti-LGBTQ, that are racist, they’re anti
Muslim, that are supporting candidates
for these local boards. And they’re trying
to take over at a local level and build up
candidates at the local level that they can
then run for the state legislature and for
other offices.”
Far-right groups such as Awake Illinois
morphed from fighting school-based
COVID mitigations into battling so-
called “woke” ideas like Critical Race
Theory (which isn’t taught anywhere), sex
education, and local drag story-reading.
The group once referred to Governor
Pritzker as a “groomer.”
Awake Illinois claimed last week that
they’ve identified more than 70 candi-
dates, although the group’s political com-
mittee reported having just $100 in cash
in January and it often grossly exaggerates
its real-life prowess.
But the environment out there is hot
right now, with national activists includ-
ing Charlie Kirk holding local events and
stirring up passions. The Illinois Policy
Institute has a private “Parents Union”
Facebook group that focuses on school
board elections and sharing informa-
tion and ginning people up as much as
possible.
Local Republican Party organizations
are also jumping into races, including
in McLean County, which has become a
hotbed of radicalization. Palatine’s high
school district is also attracting local GOP
assistance, where some residents are up in
arms about the local school board adopt-
ing sex-education standards. “Together
we can gain a majority on the board and
put a stop to the sexualization of chil-
dren in our schools,” read one recent
door-hanger.
When told of local Republican Party
support for some of these candidates and
asked what he intended to do about it,
Pritzker said, “We are supporting candi-
dates that are standing up for freedom.”
But with an April 4 election date looming,
that plan hadn’t yet been in plain sight.
The plan is now coming into more
focus. The Democratic Party of Illinois
began by initially looking at 400-some
races and then identifying more than
100 what they call “fringe” candidates
in 60 different school-board districts.
All of those districts and most of those
candidates will be targeted in what party
officials say will be a “robust” campaign.

education program,” explained a Demo-
cratic Party of Illinois official. The state
party will be “shedding light on the fact
that there are candidates supported by
these national extremist groups that are
on their ballot.”
“We want to make investments that
actually have some real effect at spreading
the word about these extremist candi-
dates,” the official said.
The party’s preferred candidates will
receive on-the-ground help, like “cutting
turf” for door-to-door canvassers. But
they’ll also receive assistance with their
messaging, plus the state party will spon-
sor or help with direct-mail and digital
ads, as well as opposition research.
The state party has been working on
this plan for weeks and has reached out
to local county parties, state central
committeepersons, grassroots groups,
and unions (mainly the teachers and
AFSCME), not only for help with can-
didates and identifying the radicals, but
also with knowledge of important issues
in the targeted districts.
These races are not partisan in the
traditional sense because candidates often
run on local slates. So mailers paid for
by the Democratic Party of Illinois could
generate a backlash. But DPI is saying
that they’ll mainly be communicating
“to a base audience” of fellow Democrats.
The party also says they’ll be deferring to
local “partners” on “where to be involved
louder than other areas.”
“A lot of these people, this was their first
time running for office,” the party official
said. While some have political experi-
ence, they are “looking for some guidance
on how to structure their campaign, what
kind of timeline to follow, how to target
voters. So we’re providing them with that
sort of campaign expertise.”
Without intervention, the party official
said, “We could easily see ourselves elect-
ing numerous extremist folks to these
positions that have a ton of power.”
“Our values are on the line,” the official
claimed.
This is an unprecedented move, but per-
haps we’re in unprecedented times. And
it’s exactly the sort of thing the governor
has been saying for years that the state
party should be focusing on: Building the
party up from the bottom and focusing
resources on much more than legislative
and statewide contests.

All Eyes on the International Health
Regulations Proposed Amendments
I
t took nearly three years for the COVID pan-
demic to reveal itself as less lethal to humans
than almost all influenzas, as 99.97 percent of all
humans survive a COVID infection. Additionally
COVID is characterized as nonlethal to human
children, unlike influenza that, according to the
CDC, takes the lives of hundreds of children every
year. To date, there is not a single childhood death
that can be conclusively attributed to COVID-19.
It is apparent that a cartel of misguided public
health authorities, including the World Health
Organization (WHO), the U.S. National Health
Institute (NIH), Center for Disease Control
(CDC), and Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), unleashed provably detrimental extreme
mitigations that had planetary negative conse-
quences, resulting in far more death and destruc-
tion than COVID-19 ever could.
Contributing mightily to the lost trust for public
health authorities worldwide are the experi-
mental injections that have been largely forced
on panicked populations, driven to hysteria by
media’s relentless fear-mongering and maniacal
messaging on behalf of public health authorities
that promoted these injections as safe and effective
vaccines and boosters, even though there is no
persuasive proof that such claims are true, then
or now.
And sadly, these reapers are not finished,
having just approved COVID-19 experimental
injections for inclusion on the childhood immu-
nization schedule with zero clinical trials proving
safety or efficacy for this age cohort, especially
long term! The only logical explanation for such
an unjustified action against children at statistical
zero risk from COVID is securing for Pfizer and
Moderna full indemnity from liability for harm
caused by the jabs, including harm to adults, if the
jabs are listed on the childhood immunization
schedule per the National Childhood Vaccine
Safety Act of 1986.
Since 2013, once the 1948 Smith-Mundt Act
was repealed, it was no longer illegal to propa-
gandize U.S. citizens. The 2013 Smith-Mundt
Modernization Act enabled the Fourth Estate, the
people’s watchdog, to become the instrument of
unbridled government propaganda. Media now
broadcasts and publishes whatever government
sanctioned narratives (whether fact or fiction or
both), scripted messaging, and political protec-
tion is ordered under a blanket of feigned national
security.
In addition, unconstitutional criminal conduct
by an array of government agents colluding with
mainstream and social-media co-conspirators
to surveil, target, and suppress need-to-know
information from public consumption, includ-
ing the censorship and deliberate discrediting of
Americans who disseminate it, regardless of how
credentialed, is going un-prosecuted, thereby con-
tributing to a flagrant lawlessness that is danger-
ously destabilizing.
Still, the universe has rules and truth will
always out. Always. The authorities’ aggressive
suppression of alternative information, its overt
lack of transparency, its adamant refusal to pub-
licly debate the controversies plaguing most things
COVID, and the contributory corruption of high

ment of public health and the medical industrial
leadership, globally.
Extreme mitigations, such as shuttering Main
Street businesses, combined with an aggressive
covert collaboration of suppression, with its cal-
lous injustice and absurd politicization of some-
thing as apolitical as a global pandemic, targeted
small-to-medium-sized businesses for closure.
This unjust burden provided an effective economic
bulldozer, initiating a predictable chain reaction of
supply shortages and production incapacities for
critical needs such as food, energy, fuel, and basic
needs that continues to escalate while most Ameri-
cans do precious little to intervene.
Lockdowns, quarantines, and isolation mitiga-
tions denied children their education for nearly
two years, with heartbreaking consequences The
emotional damage continues to present with
increased drug use, overdoses, confusion, and fear,
leading to depression and suicides amid growing
mental and physical health issues, not to mention
the profound insecurities triggered from observ-
ing adults severing lifelong relationships, or the
sudden social/political divisions among family,
friends, and schoolmates that weren’t there before.
Meanwhile, mainstream media and big tech
embraced an enhanced and lucrative role as dis-
seminate of government propaganda like never
before. Drenching audiences 24/7 in combined
torrents of debilitating fear and incoherent
politicization effectively anchored pandemic
propaganda, successfully influencing acceptance
of extreme mitigations that included tyrannical
bio-medical compliance that had the additional
destabilizing benefit of societal fissures that can
now be exploited.
The only positive to come from such a focused
campaign of behavior manipulation is that social-
media platforms have finally been exposed for
the hyper-partisan, suppressive frauds they are,
manufacturing accounts’ pretend followers, likes,
posts, dislikes, and trends to create twisted fictions
that so many rely on for their identity and sense of
social acceptance.
Health Emergency Management Is Negotiat-
ing Global Governance Unless We Prevent It
Now
The political fallout from COVID mismanage-
ment has also resulted in politiopaths wishing to
offload the responsibilities for health emergencies
to the World Health Organization (WHO) in an
all-too-familiar cowardly dodge, not unlike our
Ukraine engagement (and many more conflicts
before it) with no congressional “Declaration of
War” as dictated in the U.S. Constitution.
To that end, the WHO is meeting with specific
delegates chosen from the 196-member countries
to discuss the 300-plus proposed amendments
submitted throughout 2022 to significantly
upgrade the International Health Regulations
(IHR) and WHO’s role in managing health
emergencies, globally. The amendments would
purportedly transform the IHR from mere guid-
ance to legally binding governance authority using
a loophole that would permit adoption of the
amendments on a “provisional basis.”
Know More. Do More.
The net result would be to relinquish U.S. sov-
ereignty whenever a “potential health emergency”
is declared by the WHO’s director general. Unless
aggressively challenged by member countries not
wishing for a foreign centralized authority manag-
ing health emergencies by proxy, U.S. citizens need
to expressly declare their refusal to comply with
such an unconstitutional usurpation by a foreign
organization, asserting their own constitutionally
protected authority and insisting congress issue
the necessary challenges and legislation to prevent
its adoption.
The amendments are a direct assault on every
country’s sovereignty and self-determination,
therefore must be summarily rejected by its
citizens, including the U.S., regardless of political
affiliation. For once, leave partisanship out of it.
This is far too important for a political squabble
that requires a resolute national stand.
The February/March 2023 IHR working group
delegates include participation by our own U.S.
delegates: Health & Human Services (HHS)
Secretary Xavier Beccera, HHS Deputy Director
of Global Affairs Colin McIff, and HHS Assistant
Secretary of Global Affairs Loyce Pace. Secretary
of State Antony Blinken also named Pamela
Hamamoto (former EU Ambassador under
Obama and current Chief of Mission to the United
Nations) to the IHR negotiating team, and also
to the working group for the Pandemic Preven-
tion, Preparedness, and Response Treaty of 2024,
a separate document altogether that requires our
vigilance, as well.
The clever work-around strategy for the U.S.
Constitution, an otherwise formidable obstacle
to ceding sovereignty to foreigners, is to adopt
the final amendments with a simple majority
vote of the select delegates present. This adoption
would immediately give the new IHR the force of
law, legally binding member countries to its new
charter on a provisional basis. Normally such
substantial revisions would require each member
county’s legislative approval before official adop-
tion becomes legally binding. The ‘provisional
basis’ clause allows an immediate enactment and
enforcement of the new regulations until indi-
vidual countries sort it out for themselves later …
if they sort it out.
Most countries will likely remain unaware
of the sea change, let alone its impact, until the
first time the WHO declares an emergency, or a
potential emergency, whichever will justify the
most funding on demand from member countries
on the hook for supplying such funds.
Imagine the WHO, under the dictatorial con-
trol of current Director General Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus, declaring a “potential emergency”
and commandeering U.S. resources to redirect
“supplies” to countries of Tedros’ choosing. Or
mandating additional COVID experimental jabs
manufactured in China, for which the CDC and
FDA no longer require clinical trials for safety or
efficacy.
Thanks to the herculean efforts of James
Roguski, below is a list of 10 entirely unacceptable
amendments currently on the table for negotiation
in Geneva. Mr Roguski has followed this mostly
secretive, often confusing usurpation of emer-
gency health management by the WHO, endorsed
by the World Bank, the World Economic Forum
(WEF), to name a few global stakeholders.
Again, these IHR amendments would cede
total authority to the World Health Organiza-
tion, a centralized global organization in Geneva,
Switzerland, that failed miserably in managing the

COVID pandemic. That said, Mr Roguski’s robust
body of work has made it possible to review the
International Health Regulation amendments so
that we can decide for ourselves what we consider
unacceptable. Americans should not, and I do not,
consent to WHO authority over any medical deci-
sions, personal or otherwise.
The Top 10 Amendments to the International
Health Regulations That Need to Be Opposed

DATORY: Change the overall nature of the World
Health Organization from an advisory organiza-
tion that merely makes recommendations to a gov-
erning body whose proclamations would be legally

2) POTENTIAL RATHER THAN ACTUAL
EMERGENCIES: Greatly expand the scope of
the International Health Regulations to include
scenarios that merely have a “potential to impact
public health.” (Article 2)
3) DISREGARD FOR DIGNITY, HUMAN
RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS: Seek to remove
“respect for dignity, human rights and fundamen-
tal freedoms of people.” (Article 3)
4) ALLOCATION PLAN: Give the Director
General of the WHO control over the means of
production through an “allocation plan for health
products” to require developed states parties to
supply pandemic response products as directed.
(Article 13A)
5) MANDATORY MEDICAL TREAT-
MENTS: Give the WHO the authority to require
medical examinations, proof of prophylaxis, proof
of vaccine and to implement contact tracing, quar-
antine, and TREATMENT. (Article 18)
6) GLOBAL HEALTH CERTIFICATES:
Institute a system of global health certificates in
digital or paper format, including test certificates,
vaccine certificates, prophylaxis certificates,
recovery certificates, passenger locator forms and
a traveller’s health declaration. (Articles 18, 23, 24,
27, 28, 31, 35, 36, and 44 and Annexes 6 and 8)
7) LOSS OF SOVEREIGNTY: Would
empower the Emergency Committee to override
decisions made by sovereign nations regarding
health measures and would make the Emergency
Committee’s decisions final. (Article 43)
8) UNSPECIFIED, POTENTIALLY ENOR-
MOUS FINANCIAL COSTS: Redirect unspeci-
fied billions of dollars to the Pharmaceutical
Hospital Emergency Industrial Complex with no
accountability. (Article 44A)
9) CENSORSHIP: Greatly expand the World
Health Organization’s capacity to censor what
they consider to be mis-information and dis-
information. (Annex 1, page 36)
10) OBLIGATION OF DUTY TO COOPER-
ATE: Creates an obligation to build, provide, and
maintain IHR infrastructure at points of entry.

Patients’ Dignity, Human Right,s and
Freedoms Are Internationally Recognized and
Legally Upheld
The WHO, in cooperation with government
and public health authorities in the U.S. and
around the world, violated patient dignity, human
rights, privacy, freedoms, and self-determination
as defined in various international treaties,
accords and documents, based on a corona viral
disease that posed no threat to 99.97 percent of
Earth’s human population. These violations were
made more egregious as mandated experimental
injections ignored established legally binding
international rules for experimentation on human
subjects, including non-negotiable “Informed
Consent” as provided for in the Nuremberg Code
of Conduct (1947) and Geneva Convention (1948).
In furtherance of individual medical protec-
tions, the Declaration of Helsinki provides ethical
principles for medical research involving human
subjects. It was adopted by the 18th Assembly
of the World Medical Association in Helsinki,
Finland, 1964. Ten of the original principles
come from the Nuremberg Code of Conduct, with
other principles were culled from the Declaration
of Geneva. Below are several of the paragraphs
from the Helsinki Declaration that appropriately
deserve attention, if just for proper perspec-

World Medical Association Declaration
of Helsinki – Ethical Principles for Medical
Research Involving Human Subjects (1964)
Preamble
1) The World Medical Association (WMA)
has developed the Declaration of Helsinki as a
statement of ethical principles for medical research
involving human subjects, including research on
identifiable human material and data. The Decla-
ration is intended to be read as a whole and each of
its constituent paragraphs should be applied with
consideration of all other relevant paragraphs.
2) Consistent with the mandate of the WMA,
the Declaration is addressed primarily to physi-
cians. The WMA encourages others who are
involved in medical research involving human
subjects to adopt these principles
General Principles
3) The Declaration of Geneva of the WMA
binds the physician with the words, “The health
of my patient will be my first consideration,” and
the International Code of Medical Ethics declares
that, “A physician shall act in the patient’s best
interest when providing medical care.”
4) It is the duty of the physician to promote
and safeguard the health, well-being and rights
of patients, including those who are involved in
medical research. The physician’s knowledge and
conscience are dedicated to the fulfillment of this
duty.
5) Medical progress is based on research that
ultimately must include studies involving human
subjects.
6) The primary purpose of medical research
involving human subjects is to understand the
causes, development and effects of diseases and
improve preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic

interventions (methods, procedures and treat-
ments). Even the best proven interventions must
be evaluated continually through research for
their safety, effectiveness, efficiency, accessibility
and quality.
7) Medical research is subject to ethical
standards that promote and ensure respect for
all human subjects and protect their health and
rights.
8) While the primary purpose of medical
research is to generate new knowledge, this goal
can never take precedence over the rights and
interests of individual research subjects.
9) It is the duty of physicians who are involved
in medical research to protect the life, health, dig-
nity, integrity, right to self-determination, privacy,
and confidentiality of personal information of
research subjects. The responsibility for the protec-
tion of research subjects must always rest with the
physician or other health care professionals and
never with the research subjects, even though they
have given consent.
10) Physicians must consider the ethical, legal
and regulatory norms and standards for research
involving human subjects in their own countries
as well as applicable international norms and stan-
dards. No national or international ethical, legal or
regulatory requirement should reduce or eliminate
any of the protections for research subjects set
forth in this Declaration.
11) Medical research should be conducted in
a manner that minimizes possible harm to the
environment.
12) Medical research involving human subjects
must be conducted only by individuals with the
appropriate ethics and scientific education, train-
ing and qualifications. Research on patients or
healthy volunteers requires the supervision of a
competent and appropriately qualified physician
or other health care professional.
13) Groups that are underrepresented in medi-
cal research should be provided appropriate access
to participation in research.
14) Physicians who combine medical research
with medical care should involve their patients in
research only to the extent that this is justified by
its potential preventive, diagnostic or therapeutic
value and if the physician has good reason to
believe that participation in the research study will
not adversely affect the health of the patients who
serve as research subjects.
15) Appropriate compensation and treatment
for subjects who are harmed as a result of partici-
pating in research must be ensured.
Risks, Burdens, and Benefits
16) In medical practice and in medical research,
most interventions involve risks and burdens.
Medical research involving human subjects
may only be conducted if the importance of the
objective outweighs the risks and burdens to the
research subjects.
17) All medical research involving human
subjects must be preceded by careful assessment
of predictable risks and burdens to the individuals
and groups involved in the research in comparison
with foreseeable benefits to them and to other
individuals or groups affected by the condition
under investigation. Measures to minimize the
risks must be implemented. The risks must be con-
tinuously monitored, assessed and documented by
the researcher.
18) Physicians may not be involved in a research
study involving human subjects unless they are
confident that the risks have been adequately
assessed and can be satisfactorily managed. When

the risks are found to outweigh the potential
benefits or when there is conclusive proof of defini-
tive outcomes, physicians must assess whether to
continue, modify or immediately stop the study.
Vulnerable Groups and Individuals
19) Some groups and individuals are particu-
larly vulnerable and may have an increased likeli-
hood of being wronged or of incurring additional
harm. All vulnerable groups and individuals
should receive specifically considered protection.
Scientific Requirements and Research
Protocols
21) Medical research involving human subjects
must conform to generally accepted scientific
principles, be based on a thorough knowledge
of the scientific literature, other relevant sources
of information, and adequate laboratory and, as
appropriate, animal experimentation. The welfare
of animals used for research must be respected.
22) The design and performance of each
research study involving human subjects must
be clearly described and justified in a research
protocol.
Research Ethics Committees
23) The research protocol must be submitted for
consideration, comment, guidance and approval
to the concerned research ethics committee
before the study begins. This committee must be
transparent in its functioning, must be indepen-
dent of the researcher, the sponsor and any other
undue influence and must be duly qualified. It
must take into consideration the laws and regula-
tions of the country or countries in which the
research is to be performed as well as applicable
international norms and standards but these must
not be allowed to reduce or eliminate any of the
protections for research subjects set forth in this
Declaration.
The committee must have the right to monitor
ongoing studies. The researcher must provide
monitoring information to the committee,
especially information about any serious adverse
events. No amendment to the protocol may be
made without consideration and approval by
the committee. After the end of the study, the
researchers must submit a final report to the
committee containing a summary of the study’s
findings and conclusions.
Privacy and Confidentiality
24) Every precaution must be taken to protect
the privacy of research subjects and the confidenti-
ality of their personal information.
Informed Consent
25) Participation by individuals capable of
giving informed consent as subjects in medical
research must be voluntary. Although it may be
appropriate to consult family members or com-
munity leaders, no individual capable of giving
informed consent may be enrolled in a research
study unless he or she freely agrees.
26) In medical research involving human
subjects capable of giving informed consent, each
potential subject must be adequately informed
of the aims, methods, sources of funding, any
possible conflicts of interest, institutional affili-
ations of the researcher, the anticipated benefits
and potential risks of the study and the discom-
fort it may entail, post-study provisions and any
other relevant aspects of the study. The potential
subject must be informed of the right to refuse to
participate in the study or to withdraw consent to
participate at any time without reprisal. Special
attention should be given to the specific informa-
tion needs of individual potential subjects as well
as to the methods used to deliver the information.

After ensuring that the potential subject has
understood the information, the physician or
another appropriately qualified individual must
then seek the potential subject’s freely-given
informed consent, preferably in writing. If the
consent cannot be expressed in writing, the non-
written consent must be formally documented
and witnessed.
All medical research subjects should be given
the option of being informed about the general
outcome and results of the study.
Use of Placebo
33) The benefits, risks, burdens and effective-
ness of a new intervention must be tested against
those of the best proven intervention(s), except in
the following circumstances:
Where no proven intervention exists, the use of
placebo, or no intervention, is acceptable; or
Where for compelling and scientifically sound
methodological reasons the use of any interven-
tion less effective than the best proven one, the
use of placebo, or no intervention is necessary to
determine the efficacy or safety of an intervention.
And the patients who receive any intervention
less effective than the best proven one, placebo, or
no intervention will not be subject to additional
risks of serious or irreversible harm as a result
of not receiving the best proven intervention.
Extreme care must be taken to avoid abuse of this
option.
Post-Trial Provisions
34) In advance of a clinical trial, sponsors,
researchers and host country governments should
make provisions for post-trial access for all partici-
pants who still need an intervention identified as
beneficial in the trial. This information must also
be disclosed to participants during the informed
consent process.
Research Registration and Publication and
Dissemination of Results
36) Researchers, authors, sponsors, editors and
publishers all have ethical obligations with regard
to the publication and dissemination of the results
of research. Researchers have a duty to make
publicly available the results of their research on
human subjects and are accountable for the com-
pleteness and accuracy of their reports. All parties
should adhere to accepted guidelines for ethical
reporting. Negative and inconclusive as well as
positive results must be published or otherwise
made publicly available. Sources of funding, insti-
tutional affiliations and conflicts of interest must
be declared in the publication. Reports of research
not in accordance with the principles of this Dec-
laration should not be accepted for publication.
Unproven Interventions in Clinical Practice
37) In the treatment of an individual patient,
where proven interventions do not exist or other
known interventions have been ineffective,
the physician, after seeking expert advice, with
informed consent from the patient or a legally
authorized representative, may use an unproven
intervention if in the physician’s judgment it
offers hope of saving life, re-establishing health or
alleviating suffering. This intervention should sub-
sequently be made the object of research, designed
to evaluate its safety and efficacy. In all cases, new
information must be recorded and, where appro-
priate, made publicly available.

Oscar Predictions
I
t feels odd to preface a lengthy article
devoted to my predictions for the 95th
Annual Academy Awards by asking you
to not listen to me. But this year? If you want
to win your Oscars pool? Don’t listen to me.
I mean, you can listen to me a little. With
voting for ABC’s 2023 ceremony – hosted
by Jimmy Kimmel and scheduled to air at 7
p.m. CT on Sunday, March 12 – taking place
from March 2 through 7, nearly all of the
Oscars’ significant precursors have already
announced their winners. We know the
victors of the Golden Globes and the Critics
Choice Awards (CCA), as well as the Pro-
ducers Guild of America (PGA) and Direc-
tors Guild of America (DGA). (The Writers
Guild will announce its recipients on March
5, but as nine-time Oscar contenders The
Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on the
Western Front weren’t even eligible, the
WGA prizes are hardly the bellwethers that
the producers- and directors-branch laurels
are.) More importantly, we know the cham-
pions of the two awards bodies that have
significant overlap with a large percentage of
Academy members: the British Academy of
Film & Television Awards (BAFTA), and the
Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), which,
for the first time since 1998, didn’t overlap
on their choices at all. Four actors won at
BAFTA, and a completely different four won
at SAG.
Although rare, this is a happenstance
that should occur with greater frequency:
Where’s the fun in preordained Oscar
champs? But it also makes the fool’s
errand of predicting a lot trickier, and far
less reliable. Does Brendan Fraser’s teary,
overwhelmed speech at SAG trump Austin
Butler’s standing ovation at BAFTA? Does
Michelle Yeoh’s obviously popular SAG vic-
tory give her an edge over the force of nature
that is Cate Blanchett in TÁR – especially
when you consider that Blanchett herself has
appeared to be rooting for a Yeoh win? And
WTF is going on with Supporting Actress
this year, where the victors have been all
over the map? Much as I’d love to tout my
“expert” bona fides, I’m as at-sea as anyone
regarding what’ll transpire on March 12 …
even though, if I were a betting man, putting
some dough on Everything Everywhere All
at Once for a number of high-profile wins
wouldn’t be the dumbest idea in the world.
So please take these guesses with a grain
of salt, and know that among the 23 catego-
ries, I’ll be more than content if I manage
to predict, say, 15 of them with accuracy.

The Academy Awards’ preferential-ballot
system that was initiated more than a decade
ago has made Best Picture an obscenely
tough category to correctly predict; you
not only have to figure out what title voters
like most, but more importantly, what they
like second- and third-most. Sometimes
this works in a cineplile’s favor (Parasite,
Moonlight); sometimes in a populist’s
favor (CODA, Green Book). But this year,
Everything Everywhere feels like the option
that covers both terrains, being just weird
and autuer-y enough to make movie geeks
happy, and just sentimental and accessible
enough – and with terrific box office, to boot
– to make Regular Folk happy. Unless voters
go strangely BAFTA-y and choose to reward
All Quiet, I truly can’t fathom a loss for
the CCA, PGA, DGA, and SAG-ensemble
champ EEAaO, whose victory would also
have the benefit – as CODA and Parasite and
Moonlight did – of leaving viewers awfully
happy when they see the film’s team gath-
ered onstage for the final win of the evening.

This is an Oscars year that feels ripe for a
crazy-ass upset, and if one doesn’t happen
in Best Picture, I predict it’ll happen here –
and that Field will be the one who benefits.
(Martin Scorsese publicly declaring that
“the clouds lifted when I saw Todd’s film” is
not a recommendation to be taken lightly.)
Playing it safe, though, I’m going with DGA
champs the Daniels, especially consider-
ing BAFTA winner Edward Berger isn’t
an option, and Spielberg’s Globes moment
appears to have come and gone. Beyond
which, who doesn’t want to see these film-
making besties hug each other on national
television?

Upon leaving my April screening of
EEAaO, I texted a friend saying that Yeoh
was going to win this category. His reply –
“If you say so” – implied that he wasn’t at all
convinced. Ten months later, especially in
light of her recent SAG triumph, I’d still be
totally in the tank for Yeoh … if Blanchett’s
movie didn’t land this past fall and instantly
boast one of the most thoroughly astonish-
ing screen performances of all time. I’d be
thrilled to be wrong on this guess; Yeoh is
magnificent, and it’s been 21 years since
Halle Berry became the Oscars’ first, and
only, Best Actress who wasn’t Caucasian.
BAFTA honoree Blanchett, however, doesn’t
merely feel likely. She feels undeniable.

As with TÁR, I left Elvis, and Butler’s
thunderous portrayal within it, thinking I’d
just seen the no-contest winner of a leading-
performer Oscar for 2023. But unlike with
TÁR, I’m not seeing a truly credible threat
for this prize. I mean, maybe the beloved
RCReader.com/Calendar.

SAG recipient Fraser, though The Whale’s
lack of a Best Picture nomination still gives
me pause. And maybe Farrell, though the
actor doesn’t have either bio-pic mimicry
or loads of prosthetics augmenting his mel-
ancholic comic turn. Granted, this is one of
few categories in which the obviously adored
Banshees is a viable contender. But if voters
are itching to reward the film somewhere,
they do have another option … .

The smart money is on one of two per-
formers overdue for career-achievement
recognition: Globe and CCA winner Bassett,
who would no doubt give an emotional
tribute to Chadwick Boseman, and Curtis,
who co-stars in the presumptive Best Picture
winner and gave a killer speech at SAG.
The thing is, though, the Oscars rarely go
for career-achievement wins in the acting
races anymore. Just ask Glenn Close and
Sylvester Stallone. Acknowledging the last
time this category was so agonizingly tough
to predict, which was 15 long years ago, I’m
consequently thinking Condon gets the
Tilda-Swinton-in-Michael-Clayton prize: an
Oscar awarded to a best-in-show performer
(and BAFTA victor) whose much-nominated
movie likely won’t win any other Academy
Awards. And if Martin McDonagh nabs a
Screenplay trophy, Condon’s winning crite-
ria is easily amended: It’ll be the Mo’Nique-
in-Precious prize instead.

I should be feeling more confident in this
pick than I am, given that the previously
nominated Polley has been an admired
movie figure for a quarter-century now,
and that her film likely got a Best Picture
nod largely because of its screenplay. But
AQotWF’s BAFTA win makes me cautious.
Then again, Women Talking wasn’t even
nominated at BAFTA. Then again again, that
might indicate that film folk aren’t terribly
fond of this Mennonite drama. This category
will be a true nail-biter to the end … and
I’m someone who reflexively bites his bails
already.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Turning Red
As much as I’d love to follow my heart and
predict Marcel, I have to concede that the
only thing Academy voters likely love more
than this talking shell is Guillermo del Toro
– and only one of them would show up at
their ceremony and give a speech.

movie in hopes of the winner giving a devas-
tating speech. And this year, do not under-
estimate the possibility of voters wanting to
hear a full-throated defense of Ukraine.

Elvis’ Mandy Walker would be the first

against a period war film for Best Sound –
even if, because most people will have seen
this Netflix title on their TVs, laptops, and
phones, the AQotWF nominees will have to
hope that voters’ devices had awfully good
sound quality.

I’d be more willing to lean toward Babylon
in this category if composer Justin Hurwitz’s
music cues didn’t keep reminding me of
similar melodies and chord progressions
he employed for La La Land. Instead, I’m
opting for Volker Bertelmann’s anything-
but-All-Quiet sonic thunder, which wasn’t
era-appropriate at all, but certainly escalated
the tension, oppression, and dread. Though
we might spare a passing thought for The
Fabelmans’ John Williams, who will soon be
the loser of 48 Academy Awards. Maybe the
five Oscars he already has can cheer the poor
guy up.

night. I’d suggest putting all your money on
it through some potentially suspect betting

Brendan Fraser’s morbidly obese counte-
nance is inarguably impressive. But consid-
ering how much has been made of the Whale
actor forced to (infrequently) move about
in a 300-pound fat suit, does this qualify
as makeup, or is it a costume? I’m thinking
equally confused voters might instead opt
for Elvis here, which checks off the weight-
gain box – the last five winners in this
category all employed pounds-adding pros-
thetics – and has the added benefit of period
hairstyles and making Austin Butler, if not a
dead ringer, at least a reasonable facsimile of
The King.

erforming in support of their latest
album Unify, a 70-minute record that
Live for Live Music raved “emanates
brotherhood, evokes oneness, and embodies
inspiration in the face of adversity,” the funk
artists of Lettuce bring their national tour to
East Moline venue The Rust Belt on March
22, their 2022 release also inspiring Glide
magazine to rave that the group “does more
than enough here to solidify their well-earned
status as one of today’s leading fun-and-funk
bands.”
Composed of Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff
(guitar), Nigel Hall (keyboards, Hammond
B-3 organ, piano), Adam Deitch (drums/per-
cussion), Erick “Jesus” Coomes (bass), Ryan
Zoidis (saxophone), and Eric “Benny” Bloom
(trumpet), Lettuce began in the summer of
1992, when its original founders attended a
music program at Boston’s Berklee College
of Music as teenagers. Brought together by
the influence of various funk acts including
Herbie Hancock, Earth, Wind & Fire, and
Tower of Power, the band jammed through-
out that summer before going their separate
ways. But in the fall of 1994, its members
reconvened as undergrads at Berklee and
attempted to play at various Boston jazz
clubs, reportedly asking club owners and
other musicians if they would “let us play,”
giving birth to the moniker Lettuce.

Due mainly to positive word of mouth, Let-
tuce began developing significant followings
in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago,
and Tokyo, and they released their first CD
Outta Here in 2002, followed by their Live
in Tokyo album recorded at the Blue Note
in 2003. Five years later, drawing heavily
from many of the leaders of the 1970s funk
movement, Lettuce released their second
studio album Rage!, which featured covers of
Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up” and Charles
Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm
Band’s “Express Yourself”. In 2011, Lettuce
played on the Royal Family Ball tour with
Soulive and accompanied on select shows by
Rashawn Ross of the Dave Matthews Band,
and it was during this tour that they began
playing new songs that would be featured
on the band’s next album, 2012’s Fly! Since
then, the group has released five additional
albums including last summer’s Unify, with
Crush hitting the number-one position on
Billboard’s jazz chart and number five on the
Heatseekers chart, and Elevate was nomi-
nated for a Grammy Award for Instrumental
Album of the Year.

Mark Rouw and the
Champion Trees of Iowa
I
owa is home to some very large trees. One
Des Moines man equipped with precision
instruments and a selfless passion pains-
takingly documents these giants. Not only
does Mark Rouw humbly volunteer a lot of his
time for this worthy cause, he quietly spends
a lot of his own money. Mark spends endless
hours trekking across Iowa pursuing rumors
and requests in search of silent giants. He has
“discovered” and documented numerous
state champs but has also felt the crushing
disappointment of arriving too late, only to
discover evidence of a giant tree whose shade
shall never be enjoyed again. If only someone
had known the significance, maybe the tree
would have been celebrated and preserved
instead of being destroyed. This is Mark’s
mission.
Mark recently came to Davenport to do
his thing. I joined him. We both had wish
lists of possible records and a few “sure
things” to visit. So many trees, so little time!
Potential champion trees are determined by
a formula combining three precise mea-
surements into a score. The three measure-
ments are circumference (at breast height,
four-and-a-half feet), height, and average
crown spread. Mark is meticulously accu-
rate and notoriously conservative in these
measurements, lest there be any subjectivity
or legitimate cause for dispute. We visited
and measured a dozen trees. When the dust
settled, we had “discovered” three new state
champions and one second place. We also
remeasured an already documented state
champ to discover that it was even larger.
I spoke to Mark Rouw recently about his
mission. Here is that interview:
SC: Mark, how did you get started with
this ... “hobby”?
MR: In the early ‘70s at the Main Library
in Des Moines, I saw the National Register
of Big Trees. Idevoured all of it. Soon after, I
started looking more closely at trees around
town. Actually, before that, after school, I’d
go down to Birdland Lagoon. There were
large cottonwoods and I would marvel at
them. Some were 17 feet in circumference
and 100 feet tall.
My dad was an oil salesman and deliv-
ered it, also. In the summer, I’d ride with
him and always be looking at big trees.
We were in Hardin County and saw a big
cottonwood. I got out and measured it. It
was over 20 foot in circumference and I got
pretty excited. I think that was the tree that
spurred on this quest … in 1973.
In 1978, Iowa started its official Big Tree
program. There was an article in the Des
Moines Register soliciting nominations. A
couple weeks later, the results were pub-
lished. I read it several dozen times. That
was validation that what I was interested in
was maybe worthwhile.

SC: Why is this important to you?
MR: It’s all about accuracy. Very often,
height is very exaggerated and considered
to be accurate, official, used in books, or
published as fact. What I’ve found is heights
were often exaggerated by tens of feet. I
think there’s a need for accurate measure-
ments, and there are not a lot of people
here in Iowa doing this. Here in Iowa, we
really didn’t know how tall these trees got.
Some woodlands have been cut down two
or three times. For example: white pines.
When I started measuring them in White
Pine Hollow circa ‘85, the tallest one was
129 feet tall – taller than anything else I had
ever measured. They average about a foot a
year. The last year I measured it, it was about
136 feet tall. Then a few years elapsed before
I returned to discover that lightning had
killed it. I believe, with some confidence,
that it was the tallest tree in Iowa before it
was hit. Some white pines that are still there
were not as tall back then. These trees are
now 147 feet tall. So I believe that had the

other one survived, it would now be over
150 feet tall. Another white pine in Fayette
County is over 148 feet now, not over 150 feet
yet. [Interviewer note: 150 feet is considered
by some purists to be an elusive milestone.]
SC: How often do you show up to discover
a giant stump where a suspected champion
once stood?
MR: In terms of Davenport … pretty
frequently. The thing about big trees is that
they have no official protection. If the home-
owner wants them down, they can cut them
down if they choose. However, it is hoped
that by designating them as state champions
or significant, it will reduce the likelihood
of them being removed. Since the biggest
ones are often also very old, and reaching
the end of their lifespan, it is important to
have contenders lined up to be the next state
champion.
SC: Who pays you?
MR: (laughs) Still waiting on that one.
I did get a small amount from Des Moines
Audubon Society.
Beyond that, there has really been little
compensation. [Interviewer note: since this
interview, I and fellow board members of
the Iowa Arborist Association voted to fund
Mark $500 annually in his mission.]

SC: What have I not asked that you would
like our readers to know?
MR: I wish there were more people aware
of the Big Tree Program. I am contacting
private landowners. Some are very suspi-
cious and distrustful. It would be nice if
more people knew that this was a selfless
thing and I have no ulterior motives. The
original stuff is almost gone. The past lack
of foresight is why it is important to be able
to currently answer the question: “How tall
can a certain species of tree get in this part
of the country?” with an accurate answer.
With climate change within the next few
decades, some of the tree species in Iowa are
going to have a tough time surviving. If we
don’t start gathering information, particu-
larly height potential, now, we may not have
another chance. Most of our champion and
significant trees are in parks, cemeteries, or
people’s yards. These open grown trees tend
to develop girth, but not height. The tallest
trees are found in timbers. There is so little
old-growth timber in Iowa that we still don’t
know the height potential of many trees.

Coke, and
You’ll Smile
COCAINE BEAR
A
fter we’d viewed its trailer and
learned its title, I’m not sure it
even mattered whether Cocaine
Bear ever arrived as a legitimate release
for paying audiences. Wasn’t it already,
in our minds, the greatest so-bad-it’s-
awesome B-movie we’d ever hope to see
in our lifetimes? I mean, come on! It’s
a bear … on cocaine! Samuel L. Jackson
could only dream of headlining a comic
thriller with a conceit so outrageously
silly yet so inarguably ingenious. And
part of me still wishes that director Eliz-
baeth Banks and screenwriter Jimmy
Warden had kept their feature-length
entertainment a figment of our collec-
tive imagination, like that plethora of
faux drive-in titles that peppered Tar-
antino’s Grindhouse, or those comically
nightmarish sitcom credits implying an
actual Too Many Cooks.
Yet as I’m mostly happy and only a
wee bit disappointed to report, Cocaine
Bear does indeed exist, and manages to
nail its unassumingly tricky goal with
unexpected skill. It’s hard to imag-
ine a cinematic tone more difficult to
intentionally pull off than so-bad-it’s-
awesome, given that most works of this
variety – with Tommy Wiseau’s The
Room the eternal 21st-century example
– are only acknowledged as such after
they’ve already been judged, and largely
condemned, by the public. Aim for
laughs too broadly, and your film will
appear to be dumbing down the natural
intelligence of its participants, treat-
ing everyone – audience included – like
saps. Aim for accidental naïveté, and
the results are likely to look merely
inept, with none of the accompanying
fun. (Off the top of my head, I’d name
2016’s Independence Day: Resurgence
as an example of the former, and 2015’s
Jupiter Ascending as an example of the
latter.) But while Banks’ and Warden’s
outing is both less stupid that it could
have been and less stupid than it should

Keri Russell in Cocaine Bear
have been, I had a surprisingly agree-
able time – and so did a high-schooler
friend of mine, and my 50-something
bestie, and my octogenarian mother,
who was stoked to see the movie ever
since its preview played before our
screening of 80 for Brady. If it takes
a massive black bear high on blow to
unite the generations in this manner,
by all means bring on Cocaine Bear 2:
Grislier & Grizzly-er.
Not that it matters – or maybe it’s
part of the film’s inherent appeal – but
Warden’s script is inspired by a true
story in which drug smuggler Andrew
C. Thornton II, in 1985, jettisoned
bricks of coke out of his plane before
attempting a parachute escape that
went tragically wrong. (In the first of
many celebrity cameos in Banks’ movie,
said smuggler is played by Matthew
Rhys, who doesn’t live long enough to
be reunited with his The Americans co-
stars Keri Russell and Margo Martin-
dale.) A number of those bricks, in this
telling of the tale, landed in Georgia’s
Chattahoochee-Oconee National
Forest. A bear consequently consumes
a bunch of them. And although, in Real
Life, the black bear that apparently
ingested all those drugs basically curled
up in a ball and died without having
the time or inclination to harm anyone,
that’s not the behavior exhibited by our
titular character. Befitting a coke fiend
in the mid-’80s, she wants more, and
she wants it now, and she’ll annihilate
anyone who stands in her way. Picture
Less Than Zero, but with a ravenous

Obviously, “bear jacked up on blow”
still isn’t much of a narrative on which
an entire 95-minute movie can rest,
and one of the biggest unanticipated
pleasures of Cocaine Bear is that the
decidedly cheeseball-disaster-f lick
subplots engulfing its premise are all
at least moderately amusing in their
own right. Better still, they suggest
that legitimate thought and, dare I
say, wit were involved in their employ-
ment. Keri Rusell may be portraying a
devoted, heroic mom desperate to save
two kids from the bear’s clutches, but
she plays this archetype in the loud-
est hot-pink jumpsuit you’ve ever seen,
and the kids who need saving (the
hilarious Christian Convery and The
Florida Project breakout Brooklynn
Prince) not only handle themselves just
fine, but take a pre-attack moment to
experiment with, and loathe, cocaine.
(They maybe shouldn’t have tried to eat
it.) The wonderfully matched O’Shea
Jackson Jr. and Alden Ehrenreich may
be goons hired by Ray Liotta’s kingpin
to find his missing kilos of coke, but
they’re allowed unanticipated depths
of feeling. Isiah Whitlock Jr. may be
playing his umpteenth aggrieved detec-
tive, but he’s never before been one
with a major soft spot for a miniature
pooch who resembles the bottom half
of a mop. (I’m still astounded, though,
that Banks and Warden couldn’t find a
place for Whitlock’s signature read-
ing of “Shi-i-i-i-i-i-i-it,” because this
thing gives him at least a half-dozen

opportunities for it.)
Limbs, and pieces of limbs, are
gnawed or blown off in increasingly
gory fashion. An innocent bystander’s
brains splatter so that they barely miss
the camera. A rainfall of coke gives
our titular anti-heroine the strength to
come back from the dead. And despite
Cocaine Bear’s many trashy, unapolo-
getically disgusting wonders, I’d trade
them all for even more scenes of Margo
Martindale demurely trying to seduce
Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson
(!) before involving herself in the nasti-
est, most hilariously awful ambulance
ride I’ve seen in at least a decade of
moviegoing. Cocaine Bear is kind of
exactly what you think it’s going to be.
At its finest, though, it’s significantly
better than it deserves to be, principally
because the Cocaine Bear that we’re all
there to see doesn’t, in truth, deliver
the majority of the movie’s delights.
Not when we’re allowed the beautifully
tragicomic sight of Ehrenreich sobbing
into his plate of dive-bar penne, and
Liotta getting exactly the comeuppance
he deserves, and Convery and Ferguson
meeting at adjoining locales 100 feet in
the air in the most half-baked of f light
plans: “Bears can’t climbs trees!” / “Of
course they can!” / “Then why are you
up here?!”

Through the Past, Into the
Future: Live Music Picks for March
M
arch in the Quad Cities sees the return
of spring, or something like it. It also
brings a wide variety of live music,
from past masters and new faces. My top live
picks for March fall into each category, from
returning rock veterans to debut performances
in the Quad Cities.
British rock legends Wishbone Ash are
returning to the Redstone Room at Common
Chord (formerly River Music Experience)
for the second year in a row, their March 7
appearance falling one day shy of one year
since last year’s superb show. Attendance was
slight last year; my companions and I had
paid peasants’ admission, but were upgraded
to a free (!!!) table due to the light house. We
made little use of it; within minutes of the first
song, we were drawn irresistibly to the front of
the room, remaining there for the entire set.
Consensus among the old-timers was that it
was their best local show in years.
The power of this current incarnation of
Wishbone Ash may well come from their
acknowledgment of the past. Last year’s tour
was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of
their 1972 album Argus, with set lists draw-
ing heavily from that breathtaking nexus of
hard rock, folk, melody and Old English lore,
and a complete performance of the full album
at a show in Des Plaines, Illinois. This year
they’re marking the 50th anniversary of the
Live Dates album, kicking off the tour with a
performance of that album in its entirety of
Daryl’s House, the club owned by Daryl Hall
(yep, that Daryl Hall) in Pawling, New York,
which has hosted the Live from Daryl’s House
Web series since 2014.

With New York magazine calling their
most recent album a showcase of “deli-
ciously dark music” and “a mix of frantic,
furious riffs, dour vocals, and existential
poetry” and Pitchfork deeming it their “most
expansive statement yet,” the critically
lauded rockers of Protomartyr play Daven-
port’s Raccoon Motel on March 30 in sup-
port of their latest release Ultimate Success
Today, a recording that inspired NPR to rave
of the musicians, “I don’t think they needed
to level up, but boy, did they.”
Composed of Joe Casey (vocals), Greg
Ahee (guitar), Alex Leonard (drums), and
Scott Davidson (bass), Protomartyr origi-
nated in Detroit, Michigan, in 2010, and
released their debut album No Passion All
Technique in 2012 via Urinal Cake Records.
Although the album initially received little

Andy Powell, the band’s remaining found-
ing member, was one of the first hard rock
guitarists to use a Gibson Flying V, years before
heavy metal icons such as Michael Schenker
and K. K. Downing made it a visual staple of
hard rock. It was with that V in hand that a
20-year-old Powell walked onstage during
a Deep Purple soundcheck in 1970, making
the ludicrous and potentially lethal deci-
sion to plug in and initiate a jam with Ritchie
“Noodles McPsychopath” Blackmore, a man
as well-known for his violent temper as for his
riffs and destructive onstage antics. Instead of
sentencing the young Powell to evisceration-
by-Stratocaster, Blackmore put Wishbone Ash
in touch with Deep Purple’s management,
earning them their big break through the most
unlikely means imaginable.
It was also with that V in hand that Powell
and original Ash guitarist Ted Turner forged
a sound that is now ubiquitous in rock and
metal, that of the harmonized dual lead
guitars. No other hard-rock band had ever
sought to combine two guitars into a single
nuanced voice before Wishbone Ash released
their 1970 debut. Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden
were avowed fans, and an influence on Lynyrd
Skynyrd has been claimed; I asked the framed
painting of Allen Collins outside the Redstone
Room if this was true, but he preferred to speak
through his Firebird.
Celebration and recognition of Wishbone’s
past is reflected not only in their song choices,
but in instrumentation, as well. Along with
Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Wishbone Ash
were one of the first bands to use the visually-
striking Orange Amplifiers, blending them in
the studio with smaller Fender combo amps to
get their distinctive guitar sound. Powell and
critical attention due to its limited circula-
tion, Pitchfork called Protomartyr’s debut
“an impressive showing of sonic, lyrical,
and emotional range” that “all falls under
a cohesive banner,” while Crack magazine
praised “the smart storytelling skills and
brilliantly sardonic humor of vocalist Joe
Casey.” Protomartyr’s second studio album,
Under Color of Official Right, was released in
April of 2014, while the musicians’ third, The
Agent Intellect, followed in October of 2015.
Both recordings were likewise acclaimed,
with the latter landing on “best of 2015” lists
in The A.V. Club, the Chicago Tribune, Roll-
ing Stone, Spin, and Consequence of Sound.
The band signed to Domino Records
in 2017 and released their fourth studio
album Relatives in Descent that September,
the recording described by The Guardian

current guitarist Mark Abrahams virtually
replicated that sound on last year’s tour with a
club-sized version of same; their interplay was
studied, fluid and natural, but most impor-
tantly, the tone was there, faithfully replicating
the ‘70s studio sound for perhaps the first time
since their heyday. These details matter; atten-
tion to sound and song selection can mark the
difference between a bar-quality show and a
performance worthy of a band’s heritage. Last
year’s show fell firmly in the second category,
and with the band’s heavy touring in the time
between, Wishbone Ash’s Common Chord
stop is sure to be on the level with anything
passing through Davenport’s Adler Theatre in
2023.
Sam Locke Ward is back on the road for the
first time in years and is visiting Davenport’s
Raccoon Motel on March 17 with hand-picked
local support from Rock Island’s Chrash and
Moline’s Liv Carrow. Happy Hearts, his new
collaboration with Half Japanese founder Jad
Fair, is a giddy, disturbingly positive celebra-
tion of romance as far removed as possible
from the minimalist red-state rage of Bubble-
gum Necropolis, my favorite release of 2022.
Given Ward’s incredible artistic range, no
predictions are offered as to what he and his
new band have in store, save a one-of-a-kind
rock-and-roll experience marked with biting
humor and deep emotion.
Self-described as “phantom rock” and
“quirky pop,” Chrash play clanging, catchy
and topical punk rock; folk singer Liv Carrow’s
songs are in turn gentle, foreboding, melan-
choly, and poignant. Taken as a package, the St.
Patrick’s Day show is far removed from any-
thing else staged in the QC on that drunken
Friday; if only there were a way to surrepti-
tiously run an audio feed into some of the bars
in Davenport, with a video feed run back into
the Raccoon Motel. Now that would be a show.
The RIBCO show on March 25 is recom-
mended for aging punks whose enthusiasm for

“thought-provoking, distinctive, and testa-
ment to the boldness of post-punk in the
present day.” And The A.V. Club raved that,
with their latest release, Protomartyr’s musi-
cians “sound more awake and anxious than

sit down for a chunk of the evening. Running
Man are old blood flowing through some new
veins – four QC music lifers with a West Coast
transplant on vocals, playing driving, hook-
laden, brooding rock and roll that rings of
past punk tinnitus while pointing their amps
toward the future. Educational Davis are a
bizarro electro-fusion of Krautrock grooves
and aggro-Dada vocals spiked with early-Devo
basement tension. Creeping out the yuppies
and college kids in Madison must be getting
old, as they’ve been making steady sojourns
into the area in recent months.
Hayes Noble is new blood flowing from
old veins into the power tubes of an igno-
rantly loud Sunn Model T. The 18-year-old
just released his debut Head Cleaner, a quick
collection of ‘90s sounds à la Sonic Youth and
Dinosaur Jr., with a little dash of AmRep noise
and enough youthful energy to give the songs
the kick they need. He’s rolling down from
the hills of Galena for his first QC appear-
ance. The Cities’ drunkest (functional) punks
are opening; Road Soda are a slingshot blast
from the Davenport gutter, a proper and rude
awakening with a fresh record and tow. Grab
World’s Greatest Disappointment and stash it
quick before you spill beer all over it during
their set.
