THE PAST SIMPLE TENSE


FORMATION: -ED/-D REGULAR VERBS/ -II column – irregular verbs

(+) We spent all our money on shopping yesterday. I worked hard last week.
(-) I didn't see anyone familiar at the party two weeks ago. Didn't + infinitive
(?) Did you buy this jacket on sale last summer? Did + infinitive ?
USE: -to express an activity which happened at a definite time in the past.
ADVERBS OF TIME: yesterday morning/afternoon/ evening, ...ago, last..., in 2013..

THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE


FORMATION: WAS/WERE + VERB (infinitive) + ING

(+) She was taking a shower when she heard the doorbell.
(-) We weren't laughing while she was crying. Wasn't / weren't + V + ing
(?) Was she dancing when you first saw her? Were the kids crying all the time?

USE: 1.to set the scene for a series of past events, give descriptions (background)
-It was snowing all night long. She was wearing a long dress when I first met her.
2. two simultaneous activities- happening at the same time in the past (not intefering)
-I was doing the dishes while you were watching TV shows.
3.An activity which lasted longer in the past was interrupted by another (shorter) activity (Past Simple)
-We were having lunch when our neighbour knocked at the door. (едно минато дејство
кое траело подолго било прекинато од друго дејство, пократко по природа)
