Foreword
‘This manual is published as a guide for normal Care and Operations of your OILWELL equipment. Because of
the many factors which contribute to the proper Tunetion of malfunction of this machinery and not having eont-
plete knowledge of each factor or combination of factors, we cannot detail all facets of these subjects, He must
therefore confine the scope of this presentation and when situations encountered are not fully encompassed by
coniplete, understandable instetions, these situations must be referred to the manulacturer,
When other than routine servicing is necessary, it can be most efficiently perfonned if the unit is removed to an
area of adequate space where an overhead erane, hydraulic Hilt, hearing pullers, impact tools, etc, are accessible
‘The dimensions and tolerances specified in this publication are those desirable for the most efficient operations
of the equipment. When components. be
be possible or
wor or when new parts are introduced into 2 wom unit, it may not
sonomically feasible to reestablish such strict alignment and correct all dimensional deviations.
Improvements in design, engineerin:
materials, production methods, etc., may necessitate changes in these pro-
duets and result in inconsistencies between the contents of this publication and the physical equipment. We re-
serve the right to make these changes without incurring any Hability or obligation beyond that stipulated ia the
purchase contract.

‘The main bearing completely supports the turn
able and its drill-string load. This beating has
f& stength factor well over the rated capacity of
the rotary and provides a centering effect for the
turntable because of the angular contact between
the ball bearing and its races.

Labyrinth seals, at both top and bottom of the
turntable, protect the oilbath from contamination
from outside foreign matter. In addition, a
flexible sealing ring ataached 0 the bottom of
the hold-dowa ting, prevents mud from entering
the system in case of a well kick or 2 blow out.
‘The Tlexible lip of this ring beads upward under
the force of a stream of mud, forming, an effective
seal.

A. General
A permanent record should be made of the dats
furnished on the nameplate of cach newly
purchased rotary. This nameplate is attached
to the inside of the door above the filler cap.
As a further protection, in the event the name-
plate is lost, the serial number of the rotary is
Stamped into the hinged door undemeath the
‘nameplate.
B. “Before Operation” Check
1. Moisture caused by condensation will some
times accumulate in the base of the rotary
during storage or shipment from the plant
Therefore, before operatiag a new rotary, of
one that has been stored, it is necessary to
remove the oil-deain pipe plug Fig. 4 located
in the base to allow all moisture to drain
from the rotary
2. Reinstall the oil-drain pipe plug and fill
the reservoir with the correct amount and
quality of oil for the particular cotary (see
1D. SECTION U),
3. Check grease lubrication on inner and outer
pinion-shaft bearing according to Section Ill,
paragraph E
4. Rotate the turntable one complete revolution
by hand to make sure st tains freely
5. The position of the drive sprocket on the
pinion shaft can be shifted several inches
before it is keyed ip place. This permits
accurate alignment with the driving sprocket
of the draw works.
6. The distance from centerline rotary to center
line drive sprocker is-as follow
For the SA 17-1/2 Rotary 44 inches,
for the LA 17-12 Rotary 55-1 4 inches,
for the A20-1/2 Rotary 53-14 inches,
for the AY7-1/2 Rotary 53-1 4 inches
for the A37-1 2 Rotary S314 inches
After checking our these points, the rotary
is now ready to be placed in operation
LUBRICATION
Section III
General
As with any machinery unit, 2 prime cequisice
for securing maximum performance from Oilwell
Rotaries is to provide proper lubrication of all
working surfaces. Careful and periodic checks
of the oilbath system and the geease-packed
bearings will repay the operator many’ times
with dependable, economical service.
Oilbeth System
See Figure No. 1
Gilwell Rotaries employ a circulating oll
bath system for the gears, turntable bearing and
hold down-ring bushing. The base of the rotary
foums an wil reservoit which partly surcounds the
turntable. The rotating plnioa, dipping into
the reservoir carries vil to the ring-gear, from
which it drips continuously co the. wamtable
ball bearing, guided by a trough. From the
turntable ball bearing the oil flows down over
the face of the hold-down-ring bushing. The cop
of this bushing is beveled, sloping dowaward
and away from the working’ surface, so that a
pocket is formed which acts as a dirt trap into
Which forcign matter settles out of the oil
hefore the oil flows down the face of che tum
table bushing by the hold-down-ring. The oil,
flowing between these «wo surfaces of (a) the
bushing and the curable and (b) the bushing
and the hold-down-ring, provides an effective
cushion against shock. "The hold-down-ring
Serves a dual purpose. In addition to count=
enacting upward thease, it forms a cylindrical
container, the top of which is higher than the
oilbath reservoir level. [ts top overlaps the
Stationary oil-retainer ting. Oil is thrown out
of the hold-down-ring and bushing by centrilugal
force and flows over the hold-down-ring and oil-
retainer ting co re-enter the oilbath reservoir
This complete sequence, of course, is carried
cout continuously around the entire circumference

‘To provide for proper lubrication of the gear tain and wumtable bearings a H. D, HIGH TEMPERA-
TURE EXTREME PRESSURE GEAR OIL, is introduced into the oilbath reservoir and distributed to
the moving parts. The loading and operating conditions of these units dictates that this lubricant
must qualily under AGMA specification 250.03 (Nay 1972) and have a Tinken Load Arm Test of not
less than 608 0, Ke
‘The pour point of the selected lubrieant should be 15° F, below the starting ambient temperature.
BEARING AND GENERAL PURPOSE GREASE
roller bearings supporting the pinion shaft require a semi-solid lubricant with extreme pressure
fesistance qualities at clevated temperatures. For this lubrication use NLGI GRADE 2 LITHIUM

than 350° F. when subjected to A.5,T.M, test method D-56
CAUTION: CHECK OIL LEVEL DAILY CAUTION: GREASE NEW ROTARIES
Ic is especially important oa all new rotacies
being put into operation for the first time, that
grease be applied to each of the pinion-shatt-
bearing-aeease fitcings (Item 7) until the grease
appears outside the relief fitting which is
The oil level in all rotaries should be checked
daily and additions made as often asis necessary
to maintain the proper Level.
This assures
A dipstick type oil-level gauge is attached to
the oil filler cap Fig. 4 (Item 8). To check the
oil level, the rotary must be stopped. Remove
the oil level gauge, wipe dry and screw com-
pletely into the base, Unscrew and note the
il mark on the stick. Oil level should be kepe
beween the high and low markings.
If the rotary is used to deill a sat hole, the oil
level should be checked after the rotary is,

shows through the relief fieting.
B. Periodic Checks
1, Maincain regular daily application of grease
to the upper labyrinth grease seal of the
rotary table, according to the lubricant in-
struction plate
2. Inspect and lubricate the lacking-dog shaft
3. In draining oil from the catary, first remove
drain plug and allow all oil t escape. If
only a very small quantity of ofl escapes
this indicates chat oil passage to the oil-
ath reservoie is obstmicted. The rotary
should be thoroughly cleaned out to clear
all oil passages
4, The turntable should be removed and in-
spected, washed, greased, reassembled and
the base filled with new oil after every six
months of operation, or after the completion
of every well, whichever occurs first.
5. Bearings adjustment should be checked fro
‘ime to time with adjusiments being made
according co instructions in SECTION. VI
6. All wired capscren's should be checked regu-
larly to see that the capserews are tight and
the retaining wires are in place

Before beginning assembly of the rotary, thor
oughly clean all parts with kerosene or some
other solvent. The interior of the base should
be washed and all traces of mud and foreign
matter removed, The bearing and gear scat
Should be thoroughly cleaned, as the presence
of dict will result in improper bearing fit and
adjustment.
B, Pinion-Shoft Package Assembly
See Figure No. 3
The inner beatings on the pinion-shaft are non
adjustable double tapered and the outer one
{item 9) is of the spherical, self-aligning cype.
Should it become necessary to install new
bearings on the pinion shaft, remove first all
rough spots at the bearing seat. Any abrasion
here will interfere with the installation of the
beariags.
Then beginaing by working from the pinion end
of the shaft the procedure listed here should be
followed:
1. Shtink the inner-bearing (Item 6) onto the
shaft by first heating one inner race of this
tworow bearing and its spacer in oil 0
2500 F.
When working quickly, the expansion will
allow easy slip-on of face and spacer on the
Shaft. After cooling in position, they will
be seated tightly
Special care should be taken, that the incline
of the rollers on the inner saces point in the
Fightdirection when the races are slipped over
the shafe
Next heat the second inner race in the same
manner as the first. But before sliding in
place, bring the bearing-cep over the shaft
Thea’ slip the heated inner race onto its
seat. This also positions the cup correctly
Shrink the outer bearing and spacer (Items
9-& 13) to the shaft, working according 10
the procedure as outlined under 1
The pinioa-shaft with the bearings in place
is now ready for installation in the beating-
housing (earteidge), (Item 8).
‘This housing (Item 8) should be inspected
for smooth bores and proper fits on the
bearing-seats. All. geease-passages should
be open and the entire inside of the housing
clean and free from old grease. With the
outer fing-seal-retainer (Item 11) in place
the housing is now teady for installation of
the pinion-shafe-assembly
. Slide pinion shaft assembly into housing
(em 8),
Slip bearing-retainer (Item 4) and gasket
(rem 5) in place and secure with capserews
(tems 15 & 16).
Insere oil-seals (Icems 3 & 12) with the lips
facing outward and install oil-slinger (Item 14).
as shown in Fig, No. 3.ASSEMBLY
9. Install pinion and key (Icems 24 & 2), and
secure ia place with chrust-cap, capscrews,
and lockwire (Items 24, 25 & 26),
10.lgscall O-ring (Item 22) in groove on housing
(een 8).

ready for installation in the ratary base
C. Installation of the Pinion-Sheft-Pockage ond
Setting of the Bevel-Pinion
Observe the “TOP"-marking at the flange when
sliding the package into the base. The housing
will thea be resting on a projecting boss at the
Tower portion of the inner tim. This provides
provection for the already installed “O"-ring
seal
‘The location of the pinion shaft with relation co
the center of the curable is for all rotaries
adjustable through shims
Addition of shims will increase the distance of
the pinion shafe from the center of the rotary,
and the removal of shims will decrease that dis
tance. However, the location of the pinion shalt
should be such that the teeth of che pinion (Item
21), Fig. 3 will mesh with che teeth of the ring
‘ear (Item 25), Fig. I across their whole width.
Install pinion-shaft package in rotary for «tial
tusing some shims (Item 20), Fig. 3. Add or
remove shims as needed to get aceurate movating,
distance M.D. Check M.D. according to in-
formation on Fig. 5.
When correct setting has beea established,
fasten pinion-shaft package to base with cap-
screws (Item 18), Fig. 3 and secure with lock-
wiee (Icem 19),
‘The drive-sprocker can now be mounted on the
