EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE PRACTICE

October, 31 2011

NUMBER: 104-EMP-01 REVISION: 0

SECTION: Drilling Hook

PROJECT#: 0-1745
SUBJECT: PDOS US Level III Drilling Hook Inspection

General: A large portion of the critical areas of the Drilling Hook (Shank, spring, inner
barrel, bearings) are not accessible without disassembly. Disassembly to gain access
to these areas is beyond the scope of this inspection. In addition, the latch pin is bored
with a grease passage which renders the results of Ultrasonic Inspection unreliable.

This inspection will concentrate on the accessible exterior load bearing areas of the
hook, which are the throat area for swivel bail, link ears, and pins.

This inspection will be done in the field during the Rig move. Critical issues found will
be reviewed by U.S. Tech Center Equipment Manager. Critical issues shall be
documented with digital photos. Results shall be recorded completely using the
attached Level III Drilling Hook Report form.

Inspector Qualification: The lead on-site inspector shall be certified as an American

Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II or an equivalent inspector in the
appropriate non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods to be used. It is also desirable
that the inspection company employ at least one ASNT level III or equivalent inspector.

Surface Preparation

1) Clean the accessible areas of the throat and latch.

2) Clean the accessible areas of the bail.
3) Clean 2 inch area of grease and paint around the ball pins on the lugs.
4) Clean off grease and paint around the ends of the bail pins.
5) Clean off grease and paint from both Elevator Link ears including the
attachment to body transition areas.
6) Clean off grease and paint from the ends of the shank pins and 2” area on the
lower Hook body around shank pin.

7) An attempt should be made to remove the bail pins, particularly if the pins have
not been removed in the past year. If the pins are frozen, discontinue the
removal attempt. If the pins are removed, the Ultrasonic Inspection (UT) of the
bail pin will be replaced by Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) of the bail pin.
8) If the bail pins are removed, clean any corrosion, de-burr ridges, and grease
liberally prior to replacement.

Visual and Dimensional Inspection (VT)

1) Measure wear on elevator link ears. Grade Hook in accordance with

International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) Drilling Manual,
Eleventh Edition, Chapter E, Section 5, pages 1-6. The load capacity will be

that of the link ear with greatest wear. Record results on the Level III Drilling
Hook Inspection Report form
2) Visually inspect the body of the Drilling Hook for any damage, cracks or missing
components. Any damage shall be documented with digital photos and record
same on Level III Drilling Hook Inspection Report form.
3) Perform a visual inspection of the Drilling Hook Bail.
4) Check the freedom of tongue and latch operation. If any unusual wear or
defects exists, contact U.S Tech Center Equipment Maintenance Manager.
5) Measure radius of latch arm and hook throat, refer to IADC drilling manual.
Record results on the Level III Drilling Hook Inspection Report form.
6) Measure radius of Drilling Hook Bail refers to IADC drilling manual, Section E-5.
Record results on the Level III Drilling Hook Inspection Report form.
7) Check to insure hook rotates freely when in unlatched position and securely
locks in its locked positions.
8) Ensure a nameplate exist before the equipment inspection is completed.

Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)

NOTE: This inspection will focus on the load bearing pins and shafts which are
not readily accessible for disassembly. The inspection method known as “Back
Reflection Method” is based on a pulse-echo ultrasonic technique and is
commonly used in straight beam inspections. The concept is to pulse sound
waves from one end of the pin or shaft and evaluate the echo return from the
opposite end. A discontinuity is indicated by a dampening of the echo.

1) Ultrasonic inspect Shank pin (BJ Hook only), both Bail Pins and Latch pin as
per ASTM A-388: Standard Practice for Ultrasonic Examination of Steel
Forgings – current edition, using the back reflection method.
(NOTE: Not required to UT Bail Pins and Latch Pin if removed. These Pins
will be Magnetic Particle Inspected (MPI) if removed.)
2) Record and report any loss of back reflection by 50% loss in Full Screen Height
(FSH). Record and report any indications with 30% Full Screen Height (FSH).
Set back reflection to 100% FSH.
3) Report results in Level III Drilling Hook Inspection Report form.

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

1) Magnetic Particle Inspection shall be as per:

a) ASTM A-275: Standard Practice for Magnetic Particle Examination of Steel
Forgings - current edition,
b) ASTM E-125 Standard Reference Photographs for Magnetic Particle
Indications on Ferrous Castings – current edition, and
c) ASTM E-709: Standard Guide for Magnetic Particle Testing – current
edition.
d) AWS D1.1 American welding Society Structural Steel Code #D1.1. This
section grades the visual inspectional of welds.
2) The 2” area around the shank pin hole in the lower Hook body (BJ Hook only)
shall be MPI inspected using an AC yoke and the Dry Powder method.
3) If the Hook Bail pins were removed:
Hook Bail area of upper hook body:
 The hook bail contact area shall be MPI inspected using the Wet
fluorescent method, and
 The Hook Bail pin eyes shall be MPI inspected using the Wet
fluorescent method.
 The bail pin lugs on the upper hook body shall be MPI inspected
using the Wet fluorescent method.
 The bail pins shall be MPI inspected using the Wet fluorescent
method.
4) If the Hook Bail pins were not removed:
 The 2-inch area around each bail pin in the upper hook body shall
be MPI inspected using the Dry fluorescent method.
 The accessible areas of the bail in the block Becket contact area
shall be MPI inspected with a coil using the Wet fluorescent
method.
5) The accessible areas of the throat, the inside of the hook and the locking arm
assembly shall be MPI inspected with a coil using the Wet fluorescent method.
6) The entire elevator link ears shall be MPI inspected using a coil and the Wet
fluorescent method.
7) The entire elevator link ears shall be MPI inspected using a coil and the Wet
fluorescent method.
8) Grinding up to 0.08” is allowed to prove out indications. All the grinding must
not leave stress riser and carefully blend into base material.
9) Report results in Level III Drilling Hook Inspection Report form.

NOTE: Integral hook / block combinations shall be inspected to both hook and
traveling block procedures.

Documentation

A copy of the results of the inspection using the attached Level III Drilling Hook
Inspection Report form shall be sent to Maintenance Engineer EIT (U.S. Operations
Engineering).

Results shall be entered into the equipment specific SAP information record.

Report shall include digital photos documenting abnormal wear conditions, damage
and cracks.
