The "Master Move"

Purpose: This is a method of showing a flat object on both sides while having a ball or
other object concealed at the same time.

Method: Hold any flat object such as a panel on magazine etc. between your hands as in
Fig. 1. Underneath the right side of the panel is a ball. Ball is held against the heal of the
hand by the little finger.

Pivot the right hand to the right until the ball will just clear the side of the panel, Figs. 2-
3. It is most important that the right side of the panel be held as deep as possible into
the flesh at the base of the thumb.

When the ball has cleared the side of the panel you pivot the hand so that the ball now
comes behind the panel as in Fig. 4. Note that it is still being held against the hand by
the little finger.

3
At this time three of the fingers will be on the front of the panel. These three fingers can
be rather open, as are those on the other hand, Fig. 5.

In operation you would be holding the panel down so that the spectators see the panel
from the thumb side. The move takes place as you raise the panel up so that they will
now see it from the finger side.

Example: Figs. 11-18. These illustrations are as it would look from the spectators
viewpoint.

4
Panel held down in front of you held by the left hand. Casually stroke the empty right
hand across the panel and then right hand comes to same grip of the panel as the left,
Figs. 11-13.

At this time the fingers of both hands open and the ball is transferred to the right
fingers. If the panel is narrow, you can merely roll the ball across. If the panel is wider,
you may need to give the ball a little toss with the left fingers.

Right fingers now close in with the ball being held by the little finger against the heal of
the hand, Fig. 14.

You now start raising the lower end of the panel up to show them the other side, Fig 15.
When the panel is about horizontal, they will be seeing the hands about as in Fig. 16.
The fingers of the right hand are still closed and thus they cannot see the ball.

5
By the time that you swing the panel on up the ball is now on your side and you can have
the fingers of both hands casually open as in Fig. 17.

As you lower the panel back down, Figs. 18-19, you reverse the process and the ball can
be tossed back to the left hand again. Thus you have casually show the panel on both
sides while having a ball hidden there. That is the basic process of the move.

I emphasize the word casual because that is what it should be. You are simply turning
the panel over to show the other side.

ZONE ZERO:

I use a flat plastic panel with a hole as shown in Fig. 20. These are just the dimensions
that I use. You might want to use a smaller size as my hands are reasonably large.

Regarding the size of the hole. Use the size of ball that will be hidden properly by you
hand and then determine the size of the hole. When you put the ball through the hole,
you must not do it with your fist closed as in Fig. 21. You can get your hand through a
smaller hole if you hold is at in Fig. 22. Make the hole just large enough that you can get
your hand through with the ball.

6
Effect: You show a flat panel with a hole in it. Put a ball through the hole into Zone Zero
and it "vanishes" as you immediately show the panel on both sides. Then reach in a
retrieve the ball.

This is repeated with a little different variation.

I call the panel "ZONE ZERO" and tell them that I put the ball through the hole into
Zone Zero and it vanishes. Then I say, "But It is sort of like a functional Black Hole, and
I can reach in there and retrieve it."

Method: Hold the panel as in Fig. 23 as you show the ball.

Put the right hand through the hole with the ball and squeeze the ball so that it pops up
into the waiting left fingers. Fig. 25-26 show how you can suddenly squeeze the fingers
together to propel the ball. Talcum powder on the ball will help if your fingers are not
dry. Do not bend your right wrist to bring the ball up as that will show.

Try to avoid motion of the left hand as the fingers catch the ball. It will help if you only
open the left three fingers with the little finger pressing the panel more or less between
it and the thumb.

Right hand comes out empty, Fig. 27. Right hand grasps right side of panel and the ball
is rolled or tossed into it from the left hand, Figs. 27-28-29.

7
You now do the Master Move as you tip the panel up to show that side and then back
down when you toss the ball back to the left hand, Figs. 30-35.

Show right hand empty, Fig. 36 and then reach in and drop the ball into the right hand
and bring it out as in Figs. 37-38.

8
When you do reach in to retrieve the ball, be sure and hold the panel out to your left side
away from your body so that they will not believe that you are getting it from the body.

Second Phase: Tell them that the ball does not actually vanish when it goes through the
hole- this as you tip the panel up and put your hand through the hole so they see it as in
Fig. 39.

Tip the panel back down and do the same sequence as before. That is Figs. 24 - 35. At
Fig. 35 the ball is still hidden as shown. You now tip the panel up and swing it to Figs.
42-43.

9
Rotate the panel until it is now as in Fig. 44. At this time drop the ball straight down
into the right hand.

Do the Master Move again as you turn the panel and tip it down to Fig. 45.

Reach in and retrieve the ball, Figs. 46-47.

"Temporary Oblivion"
Effect:

A spectator places a ball in the center of a cloth that is draped over the magicians hand.
The ball seems to pass right through the cloth into: Temporary Oblivion," only to
suddenly later appear underneath the cloth.

Method:

Drape the cloth over your left hand and have them place the ball there in the center of
the cloth.

Close the hand into a fist around the ball, leaving some of the ball exposed so that they
can see that it is still there. That would look like Fig. 53.

Your right index finger comes from above to push the ball down "through" the cloth. Fig.
52 shows how this would be without the cloth showing.

The actual move you will you will use is shown in Figs. 48-51.

You bring the end of the index finger down on the ball as if you were going to push it
deeper into the cloth. You now tip the left hand up enough so that they cannot see that

11
little bit of the ball, and you push right on down with the right index finger. You actually
let the finger go down in front of the ball as in Fig. 49.

You push the index finger clear down until the side of the thumb and base of the second
finger come in contact with the left fist, Fig. 49.

At this time the end of the right index finger can curl upward under the ball. At the same
time the left thumb and three fingers move down on the ball and close inward. This
squeezes the ball upward as in Fig. 49-50.

The ball will now have been pushed upward until the back of the left thumb holds it
pressed against the right palm, Fig. 50.

If you now roll the right hand toward you and lower the heal of the hand, it will roll the
ball over the left thumb where it falls into the open left fingers, Fig. 51.

To do the effect: Drape a cloth over the left hand and have them place the ball in the
center of the cloth over your palm. With the aid of the other hand form the left hand into
a fist around the ball with a little of the ball left showing, Fig 53.

Bring the right index finger down from above until it touches the exposed part of the
ball, Fig. 52 (shown without the cloth).

12
Now tip the left toward you so that they cannot quite see the ball and push the index
finger on down in front of the ball. Complete that part of the move and the ball will be
forced up and pressed against the right palm, Figs. 54. Fig. 55 is view from your side.

Draw the right hand a little toward you and lower the heal of the hand. This will roll the
ball over the left thumb into the waiting left fingers.

With the left hand tipped so that they cannot see the ball in back, withdraw the right
finger and show as in Fig. 56. The hand will have the cloth completely closed where the
depression is.

With the left hand in this position the right hand grasps the your side of the cloth to pull
it toward you, Fig. 57. At this time you let the ball roll into the right hand.

With the right hand holding its side of the cloth, you drag the cloth off the other hand to
show that the ball has indeed gone. The right hand, with the cloth is held up so that they
cannot see the hidden ball.

When left hand is clear of the cloth, show it empty and place it back under the cloth
which is hanging down. The left hand will be near the right and you then drop the ball
into the left hand.

Draw the center of the cloth over the palm-up left hand, Fig. 58. Note that the thumb
and fingers are cupped upward so that they are about on the same level as the top of the
ball.

13
With a fairly heavy cloth you can lay your end of it on the left forearm and it will not
droop down below the left finger tips enough to show the bulge of the ball.

It is very important for it to look like the cloth is flat on your left palm.

Open the right fingers and bring the flat hand down on top of the left.

Without the cloth it would look like Fig. 59.

Suddenly straighten out the finger of the left hand and move the hand upward so that
the palm will now be about the same level that the ends of the fingers were.

This will make the ball seem to appear suddenly between the hands under the cloth, Fig.
60 (without the cloth.)

Right hand now removes the cloth showing the ball on the left.

Use whatever patter suits your needs. I usually say that it is a matter of "Molecular
Osmosis" as the ball has apparently penetrated.

Friend Dave Harkey suggests that the ball is in a state of "Temporary Oblivian."
