1. Open book, open notes examination. You may refer to any resource, except interaction with
any other person via any means.
2. No queries will be answered. Make suitable assumptions/approximations and clearly men-
tion them.

1. Consider a steam power plant with a water/steam mass flow rate of 200 kg/s. The boiler
pressure is 100 bar, the condenser pressure is 10 kPa and the steam at the boiler exit is
at 600o C. The steam is expanded in three stages in the turbine, and is extracted at 26
bar and at 3 bar for feedwater heating. The extraction at 3 bar is used to heat feedwater
in a closed feedwater heater, while that at 26 bar is used to heat feedwater in an open
feedwater heater. Assume that the feedwater leaving the open feedwater heater is at the
saturated liquid condition, and the terminal temperature difference (TTD) in the closed
feedwater heater is 5o C. The condensate from the closed feedwater heater is in saturated
liquid condition, and is pumped forward, as shown in the figure, to a mixer unit. The
mixer unit operates under adiabatic condition. Assume stage 1 and 2 turbines and pumps
to operate isentropically, while stage 3 turbine to have an isentropic efficiency of 0.9.

(a) (3 points) Complete the schematic of this plant showing all remaining required
components.
(b) (8 points) Determine the extracted steam mass flow rates at 26 bar and 3 bar.
(c) (4 points) Determine the thermal efficiency of this plant, and compare it with the
situation of single stage isentropic expansion from 100 bar, 600o C to 10 kPa.
(d) (5 points) Draw the T − s diagram for the entire plant, and show all states of
interest occurring on the isobar for 26 bar.
