Art Critique
Activity Details:

▪ Let us say we are in a gallery. There is a particular work that strikes you.
The curator comes to you and asks you how he may help you. You don’t
know exactly where to start with your queries. How do you actually read an
artwork? You just know that you like it. Some people have a background in
psychology or art criticism that makes them familiar with semiotics (study of
signs). But what if you have none of those?

▪ Let’s say that this artwork below is what you saw.

Activity No. 1.3.2 B

Art Critique (Analysis)(continued)

Activity Details:
Now, critique the work based on the following. Write your answers on the
spaces provided.
1. Formal qualities: simply enumerate the elements that you see: the
quality of lines, shapes, colors, etc.

❖ In this work of art, lines, shapes, colors, light, value, and form are all portrayed.
According to my observations, it shows a variety of line styles, including thin and
thick lines, curved, straight, direct, meandering, zigzag, or serpentine lines,
distinct and blurred, depending on the character the artist is depicting. On the
other side, the artist's shape is dubbed a biomorphic since it resembles or
indicates a type of living organism. Colors of diverse colors are also shown by the
artist. The character in this picture is two-dimensional, or 2-D. The value was the
last art feature I noticed in this piece. According to what I said about color, it
comes in a range of shades based on the image that the artist wants to portray to
his or her audience.

2. Subject
matter: What is the artist tackling about? Can you see any
representational forms? If none, what do you think is the main subject
matter?

❖ The artist talks about the customary ethnic wedding ritual. The typical form that I
have recognized in this artwork is a young couple kneeling on a bamboo platform
to receive blessings from a priest or imam. I can clearly identify the subject
matter that the photographer is trying to convey in this picture. The way this tribe
executes their engagement ritual is incredibly lovely and distinctive.

3.Composition: Consider the arrangement of objects, people, or

elements. What is most prominent? Who or what is on the
foreground, middle ground, and background?

❖ The most important pictures on this piece of art, in my opinion, were the young
couple and the priest/imam. Along with being in the front row of the artwork, their
movement or activity is also unworthy. In this piece of art, the jar and vase-like
object were in the foreground, and the young couple, the priest or imam, numerous
spectators, and the naked dancers were in the middle. Finally, the mountain ranges
that served as the event's backdrop were visible in the distance.
4.Technique: Looking at the technique and manner of painting and
composition, how is it related to the artist’s objective?

❖ The artist wanted to show off how lovely an ethnic tribe's customary engagement
ritual is. This objective was effectively communicated by the artist through the use
of composition, painting style, and technique. The picture of a young couple
receiving the imam's blessing was obviously painted on it. The artist's choice of
hues and shapes was ideal for the scenes that they depicted.
Activity No. 1.3.2 C

Art Critique (Analysis)(continued)

5.Content: What do you think the artwork is all about after carefully
examining its parts? What story, what message, and what argument is
the artist trying to tell?

❖ This artwork illustrates a customary religious wedding ceremony. An image of a

young couple receiving blessings from their tribe’s chief while knelt on a bamboo
platform can be seen in this painting. Simple scaffoldings are used to safeguard
the seated wedding guests and eager nude dancers who have assembled to
celebrate the auspicious occasion. The story's visual attractiveness was enhanced
by the azure mountain ranges in the distance. It just asserts that engaging in such
an activity was advantageous. We should be proud of it since it is absolutely
beautiful and unique. We must cherish and uphold the rich and beautiful traditions
that are a part of who we are as a people.

6. Analysis: Further dig into the artist’s intention in terms of the

relationship of each part to the whole. Keep asking why, and try to
answer them based on visual clues. Research further if needed,
especially if there is historical connection.

❖ As I looked further into the painters' reasons for creating this painting, I finally found
an answer. The name of this pricey oil painting by Carlos "Botong" Villaruz
Francisco was "Muslim Betrothal." Picture shows the Philippine Tausug tribe
performing an engagement process. A young couple receiving blessings from an
imam while knelt on a bamboo platform is shown in the painting. Simple
scaffoldings serve as protection for the seated wedding guests and eager nude
dancers who have gathered to commemorate the momentous occasion. Blue
mountains disappear into the distance, bringing a welcome calm to the otherwise
chaoticcomposition. The work's tangled construction is reminiscent of Diego River's
methodically crafted fresco "The Mighty City of Tenochtitlan."
7. Your
own criticism about the work: provide a coherent and convincing
judgment about the work.

❖ This artwork struck me as being really realistic. I like the artist's concept. He did a
great job using color and tones in his work. It's amazing how he attacked it with a
standard strategy. It was a straightforward work of art that had a lot of depth
when you looked at it. The actions taken by the character he employs here also
take place in real life. I'm drawn to the painting's atmosphere as a whole.
