EFFICACY OF ARECA NUT HUSK AS A PAVER TILE A STUDY

CHAPTER I

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Areca nut husk fibre is an agricultural waste, which does not contribute to the

economy of areca nut plantation. The use of areca nut husk fibre as reinforcing material

in the preparation of low-cost and lightweight composites provides utility value to areca

nut husk fibre. Low-cost and lightweight composites have wide range of applications in

construction industry, marine structures, automobile industry and aerospace industry. The

present work focuses on extraction of areca nut husk fibre with alkali treatment process

Gby using 6% of sodium hydroxide solution, composite panel preparation and

determination of mechanical properties of composite panels. Different fiber compositions

(fine fibre, coarse fiber and coarse fibre sandwiched with glass fibre ) of 15% by weight

were used in the present study. Tensile, flexural and impact tests were conducted to find

the mechanical characteristics the composite materials. The tensile strength of composites

made with fine fiber (15.1 MPa) is observed to be more than that of composites made

with coarse fiber (10.8 MPa). Further improvement in tensile strength of composite

panels made of coarse areca nut husk fiber layer sandwiched with two layers of glass

fiber (24.8 MPa) is observed. The flexural strength of fine fibre composites is more

when compared to that of the coarse fiber composites. The average flexural strength of

composites reinforced with fine fiber, coarse fiber and coarse fiber sandwiched with glass

fiber is observed as 73 MPa, 66.7 MPa and 284 MPa, respectively. The impact strength
of coarse fiber composites is found to be higher when compared to that of fine fiber

composites. (Muralidhar et al. 2019). Eco-friendly, low cost and lightweight products are

mainly manufactured from the areca nut husk fiber for industries such as the automobile

industry, aerospace, construction field and so on (Venugopal 2016). In the construction

industry, the areca nut fiber incorporated concrete was used for the strength improvement

(Itagi and Annapurna 2019).

Due to the continuous quarantine, a few assets we require purchase to be able to

make improvement in our backyard are presently limited but we are able to utilize

resources that accessible to improve it , for case Areca nut husk can be turned into ash

and be a substitute cement when building or making a tile, the husk of areca nut is a non-

toxic and eco-friendly material. The weight of areca fibre is less when compared to the

weight of fabricated strands The quality and durability of areca fibre is dependent on the

whole of the cellulose substance show inside the fibre.

C. RESEARCH QUESTION

This study aims to identify the factors encountered by the researcher in doing the
experiment. Specifically, the following questions:

1. How effective is the areca husk as paver block?

2. What features do the areca paver block and a normal block have in common?
3. When tested for quality, how do areca paver block and a normal block
compare?
4. How will the weather affect the durability of the paver block?

D. RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

1. The quality of sand has effect on the final product

2. There are no effect between the ash and oli that is used to make the product
3. The mixture will be affected bythe moisture and humidity

E. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The focus of this study is to determine the difference of areca husk paver block
compared to a normal paver block, the aspect was looked into were the durability, quality,
cost and effectiveness

The study would also like to know the opinion of gardeners about the areca paver
block, it aims to recognize the reaction and opinion of the gardener based on the experiment

The problem which the researcher perceived in regards on experimenting will be

enumerated. This study is limited and focused only to the researcher and gardeners of
Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino. The result of the study may also be a basis for similar
studies in the future.
F. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will merit the following:

School Administrator. The result of this study could serve as a basis to improve
school facilities for school advancement.

Facilitators. The result of this study may serve as an eye opener to create and
innovate materials, and to use for enhancing school gardens.

Barangay officials. The result of this study may serve as an eye opener to the
officials to improve our barangay with this innovation.

Parents. This study will help the family in improving and developing their
backyards

Student. This study will help students to develop their interest in innovating
material that can improve both school and their homes.

Future Researchers. The result of this study can serve as basis for further study.

from agricultural operations directly related to the growing of crops or raising of animals

for the primary purpose of making a profit or for a livelihood

of the tropical Pacific.

Efficacy- the ability to produce a desired or intended result.

Extraction- is the action of removing something

textile is formed

Innovate-  practical implementation of ideas that result in the introduction of new

goods or services or improvement in offering goods or services

Paver block-  is typically made of cement mortar, though other composite

materials are also used. It is also known as Interlocking Bricks or Cement Bricks.

Perceived- become aware or conscious of (something); come to realize or

understand.

Reinforcement-  consequence applied that will strengthen an organism's future

behavior whenever that behavior is preceded by a specific antecedent stimulus.

Tensile strength- measurement of the force required to pull something such as

rope, wire, or a structural beam to the point where it breaks.
