MICROSCOPE-”micro” comes from the Greek word

“mikros” which means small or tiny.

-“scope” which comes from the Greek word “skopein”
which means look at.
-a tool that is used to see organisms or objects that are
too small to be seen by the naked eye.
-it makes small objects look bigger
Hans Janssen and Zacharias Janssen- were the first
persons to create the first microscope.

COMPOUND MICROSCOPE
--it has two lenses that are used to magnify and focus
the specimen that you are going to study.
3 major parts of a compound microscope:
Magnifying Parts-parts of the compound microscope
that the specimen in focus becomes larger.
 Eyepiece/ocular--it is where the viewer looks
and see the magnified image of the specimen
(10x).
 Objective lenses--magnify the specimen and it
has 3 typical type of lenses: LPO, HPO & OIO
a. LPO(Low Power Objective)-shortest
objective with 10x magnification power.
b. HPO(High Power Objective)-has a 40x
magnification power.
c. OIO(Oil Immersion Objective)-longest
objective with a magnification power of 100x.
Illuminating Parts-parts of the compound
microscope which supplies light and regulates light
towards the focused specimen.
 Mirror-reflects light source up through the
bottom of the stage which illuminates the
specimen.
 Iris diaphragm-controls the amount of light
that reaches the specimen.
Mechanical Parts-parts of the compound microscope
that is used to support and adjust other parts.
 Body tube/Draw tube-A tube that separates the
objectives and the eyepiece and assumes
continuous alignment of the optics.
 Revolving nosepiece-It is responsible for
holding the objective lenses(HPO, LPO, OIO) and
it facilitates the changing of objectives.
 Adjustment knobs (coarse & fine)-Knobs which
are used to control forward/reverse and side to
side movement of the stage.
 Stage-A flat surface where the mounted slide is
placed.
 Stage clip-It holds the glass slide in place.
 Arm-A curve shape that supports the body
tube, and is used for holding the microscope when
transporting.
 Base-Provides support to the microscope.
 Inclination joint-Connects the arm to the base
and helps incline the microscope for more
comfortable viewing.
