Answers for Tutorial 4

Updates (9 Nov 2019):

There are many formulas to calculate percentile for small data. In fact, there has been some of you
voicing out your concern over the many different and mutually contradicting formulas from online
sources.

In my class, we have been using this version:

position number of the k-th percentile = 1 + (k/100)(n-1) . [inclusive version]

Like I have always said, This is the formula that will be provided in the exam. And this is the formula
that I will be using in my class at all times.

On the other hand, I have discussed with Ms Azliyana and Prof Ong from FoBIS in addressing to our
issue.

The decision has been made to allow you to choose another version below if you wish, because it is
also quite commonly used.

position number of the k-th percentile = (k/100)(n+1) . [exclusive version]

Should you use this version, your answers will be slightly different, but I will accept it as well.

However, you are not allowed to MIX different versions in a question, or marks will be deducted!
In other words, if you decided to use [inclusive version], please use it for ALL your questions.

In the coming semesters, if I ever teach MF004 again, BOTH of these versions mentioned will be
allowed in my class.

Other versions of percentile remains forbidden, including

The “Q1” and “Q3” yielded by ClassWiz calculator is from another different version and therefore
should NOT be used.
1, 2, 3 : I have already discussed many times in class, please email me if you need help on these.
