ACTIVITY IN GENERAL BIOLOGY

Peripheral Membrane Proteins- Peripheral membrane proteins are membrane proteins that
adhere only temporarily to the biological membrane with which they are associated. These
proteins attach to integral membrane proteins, or penetrate the peripheral regions of the lipid
bilayer. These peripheral proteins function as carriers of non-polar compounds between different
types of cell membranes or between membranes and cytosolic protein complexes.

Phospholids- Phospholipids serve a very important function by surrounding and protecting

internal cell components. Since they do not mix with water, they provide a structurally sound
membrane that contributes to both the shape and functionality of cells. Phospholipids serve as a
major structural component of most biological membranes, e.g. cell membrane. The
phospholipids are vital to the function of the cell membrane. Being amphipathic, their presence
creates an effective barrier preventing the entry of all molecules. Not all molecules would be able
to enter the cell.
Cytoskeleton- The cytoskeleton is a structure that helps cells maintain their shape and internal
organization, and it also provides mechanical support that enables cells to carry out essential
functions like division and movement. the cytoskeleton is responsible for cell movements. These
include not only the movements of entire cells, but also the internal transport of organelles and
other structures (such as mitotic chromosomes) through the cytoplasm.
