CELL MEMBRANE

- Is found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside
environment.
- This consists of a lipid bilayer that is semipermeable.

FUNCTION
- It provides a fixed environment inside the cell.

STRUCTURE
- The structure of the membrane is the phospholipid bilayer, which forms a
stable barrier between two aqueous compartments.
- There are compartments located inside and outside the cell.

 Phospholipid Bilayers
- a two-layered arrangement of phosphate and lipid molecules that form a cell
membrane.
- Acts as a barrier to the passage of molecules and ions into and out of the cell
 Glycolipids
- Carbohydrate-attached lipids, which are associated with cell membranes.
- To maintain membrane stability but also facilitates cell-cell communication
acting as receptors, anchors for proteins and regulators of signal transduction
 Sterols
- Any of various solid steroid alcohols (such as cholesterol) widely distributed in
animal and plant lipids.
- Regulate biological processes and sustain the domain structure of cell
membranes where they are considered as membrane reinforcers.
