¨ Attitude - When you have a positive attitude, you would feel good, think positively and
behave well towards your work/training.
¨ Values are the compelling forces that make us behave the way we do.
¨ Skills - are what we do well; they are also referred to as abilities, competencies or
proficiencies. To be skilled in something, we must have an interest in it, an aptitude
or potential and general intelligence. A learning opportunity provides the stimulus
that brings out interests and aptitude or potentials.
¨ Needs - There are many human needs. Some are strong, others are not. The strong
ones become powerful motivators to our behavior as long as they remain unsatisfied,
they will continue to motivate us to persist in behaviors that will lead to the
satisfaction of our needs.

Activity Sheet 3: Assessing your Skills
This very simple questionnaire will help you to gain a better idea of what you think your skills profile
might be. The most important part of this exercise is to discover the relationship between what you see
as your strengths and your weaknesses. You must be honest with yourself; try to use 1 (weakest) or
4 (strongest) and only 2 or 3 when you are in doubt. Your scores from this questionnaire will be used
for analysis of your profile. The profile you produce may suggest new avenues for you to explore.
By plotting out your responses to the questionnaire on Activity sheet 3, you will gain a clear picture of
your transferable skills. This will enable you to emphasize your strengths and play down-or-overcome
your weaknesses.
11
CREATING YOUR SKILLS PROFILE
To create your profile, mark a cross between the numbers 1 and 4 in the first column according to your
answers on Activity Sheet 3, and then draw a line joining the crosses. Look at the line; where it falls to the left
it indicates your weaker tendencies, where it falls to the right it shows your stronger ones.
In preparing your CV, focus on your strengths, since it is these that will get you your next job. By gaining a
better understanding of your skills, you can gauge how best they will work for you. You will still need to
account for your weaknesses.

ASSESSING SKILLS
Your completed chart will give you a clear indication of where your strengths and weaknesses
lie. It can also help you make the most of your skills and deal with any areas that you feel need
to be improved.

TOTAL INTERNAL __________
65 TOTAL EXTERNAL ___________
35
Determine the ratios of your internal/external locus of control scores by dividing the total internal score by the
total external score. Record the amount here____________.
1.857
Internal/external ratios above 3.0 indicate a high level of entrepreneurial internality; the chances are high that
such individuals will initiate entrepreneurial activities. Ratios below one indicates that the respondent has a more
external (less entrepreneurial) locus of control orientation. There is a need for this type of person to become more
internal in order to be able to initiate and sustain entrepreneurial activities. Ratios above 1.0 indicate possible
entrepreneurs. The higher the ratio above 1.0, the more internal the respondent is.
Some people believe that they are masters of their own fate. Others see themselves as pawns of fate; believing
that what happens to them in their lives is due to luck or chance. the first type, those who believe that they control
their destinies, have been labeled as internals, whereas the latter, who see themselves as being controlled by
outside forces, have been called externals.
