What is the Engineering

Design Process?
• Is a multi-step process used by engineers to
efficiently create solutions to complex problems.
• Is a systematic, iterative, problem-solving strategy,
with criteria and constraints, used to develop many
possible solutions to a problem to satisfy human
needs and wants.

Define the Problem ?

• Designer clearly outlines what human need or want
exists to solve the problem.
• Often design problems are not clearly defined.
Engineering Designers may have to investigate to define the
Design problem.

• Designers need to communicate their results to
perpetuate innovation and so others with similar
problems can learn from their design process.

Introduction to Problem
Solving
• Engineers must analyze and solve a wide
range of technical problems.
– Some will be reasonably simple single-solution
problems.
– Others will be open-ended and will likely require
AHU a team of engineers from several disciplines.
Mining Engineering Department – Some problems may have no clear solution.

Commonly Used in Engineering Analysis Problem Solving process
• Data Analysis Techniques (Statistics) • Remove time lost in debate
• Curve Fitting techniques (Looking at Graphs) • Identify weak points in processes
• Interpolation techniques • Discover systemic causes
• Single and multiple algebraic equations • Explain with reasons why an incident occurred
• Evaluating Integrals (Evaluate effects over time) • Gives a factual representation of the incident
• Economic Analysis • Compare what actually happened against what
• Optimization (Finding the best solution) should have happened, at any point during the
incident.
