BME1D02 Wearable Healthcare and Fitness Devices for Everyone

Guideline of academic essay


Writing Task Instructions
I. Purpose of the assessment
(1) To assess your degree of understanding of the principle behind wearable healthcare device.
(2) To assess your ability in evaluating the functions and applications of the healthcare wearables with reference to their working principle(s).
II. Content of the essay
You should first select a specific member of public / disease for target study (introduction).
You should identify and evaluate type(s) of wearables which can improve their quality of living/ tackle a specific health problem (review).
You should give insights into the possible improvement and future development of such wearables (critical review & prediction of future trend).
In a good essay, you should be able to …
o Demonstrate your knowledge on ways of addressing different healthcare issues;
o Demonstrate your understanding of the healthcare technologies by reviewing the working principles of wearable devices, claimed health
benefits, mechanism of improving health, and hidden issues;
o Include the pros and cons of the current wearables in the market or in development stage (you may use your personal experience as an
example whenever appropriate);
o Include the future development on wearable healthcare devices.
III. Organization and structure
This is an academic essay with advantages-disadvantages structure expected. You should organize your writing in a logical way, including what
are needed and why they are needed, what wearable devices are available with evaluation of their pros and cons, and how the chosen healthcare
wearables can be improved.
The body paragraphs should cover the following elements.

o An introduction of (a) health issue(s)
o A review of existing wearables healthcare devices for the health issue(s).
o A critical review on the strengths and limitations of healthcare wearables for the specific health issue(s).
o Prediction of the future trend of wearable health device.
IV. Word count
You have to write a minimum of 2,500 words (and no more than 3,000 words), excluding bibliography and quotations. Marks will be deducted if
you write too few or too many.
V. References
o References should be made in American Psychological Association (APA) referencing system: https://elc.polyu.edu.hk/referencing/APA.aspx.
References in other styles will be penalized. You are encouraged to use EndNote, Mendeley or other reference managing software to organize
your references.
o Select only related chapters from the list of recommended readings for further study.
o At least 20 references must be included, preferably academic paper, with at least 10 or more research papers from different journals related to
wearables.
o References could include
i. Book chapters in the list of recommended readings,
ii. Information from web link shown on the lecture materials,
iii. News websites,
iv. Wikipedia,
v. Video available online,
vi. Documentaries, and
vii. any other materials appropriate for this course

o You are highly encouraged to read relevant additional materials, which could provide solid support for your comments and ideas. Remember to
include a list of references at the end of your writing if applicable.
VI. Plagiarism check
Your drafts and final paper will be checked for plagiarism. Students submitted works with high similarity rate (similarity index rate from Turnitin
>=20%, excluding reference list) may risk failing the course.
VII. Late submission
5 marks (out of a total of 30 marks) will be deducted for each day of late submission.
