A focus group can be defined as a carefully designed discussion to obtain perceptions about a

particular area of interest (Krueger, 1991).


Evidence from focus groups suggests that an individual's opinions may change in the course of
discussion with others because people influence each other through their comments. The intention
of the focus groups is to promote self-openness among the participants. For some individuals, self-
exposure is easy, natural, and comfortable; others find it difficult and uncomfortable because self-
exposure requires trust, effort, and courage (Krueger, 1991).
