In the rubric and exemplar, we are focusing on the subject area English Language Arts. We will
specifically have a focus on writing. The following Nebraska State Standards are addressed:
LA.2.W.5 Write informative/explanatory pieces about a topic or text with supporting facts and
details.
Prior to writing, students need to have a good understanding of what facts are and how to use
In this project, students will be required to research about a topic using their school
iPads. Students will begin by learning about appropriate websites to visit to find facts.
Students will hear examples of informative writing and will then be able to brain storm a topic
that they would like to write about. After identifying the topic students will then be able to
research. Students will write a rough draft that includes 3 or more facts about the topic and a
conclusion. Next students will revise and type their informative writing into the computer/iPad.
Once that is finished students will use Flipgrid to record their informative writing.
According to Newlyn, it is believed that exemplars should be used because they help
students understand key concepts before it is to late to use. On the other hand, Newlyn tells us
that educators are concerned that the use of exemplars suppresses creativity and leads to
plagiarism (Newlyn, 2013). One of the things I would do to avoid plagiarism is to conference
with the students and help guide them through writing their facts. In addition, we would talk
about what plagiarism is and ways we can use those facts without taking it from another
person.
