PHYSICAL EDUCATION 3-DANCE
WORKSHEET 2
I. OBJECTIVE
➢ Discuss the definition and fundamentals of rhythmic and dance.

II. DISCUSSION
A good sense of rhythm is important in dance. The beat in dance music is usually produced
by the bass drum. It is very important that steps are taken on the correct beat. Being in rhythm
connects us all and reawakens our inner resources for living. It builds the ability to understand and
express rhythm through the body, the drum, through voice, and with small percussion instruments.
It takes fears away and teaches how to transfer emotions like anger and sadness into the creative
energy of being in rhythm with your whole body and the drum.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

RHYTHM- this is measured motion of flow, characterized

by basically regular recurrence of elements or features as beats,
sounds, or accents. This implies measurement of time, space and
energy. All works of art require rhythm. This is most clearly seen
through dance – the art of movement.

Rhythm is natural to every individual. This is so because of a

sense of rhythm which is influenced by the rhythmic beating of
his heart, the rhythmic movement of his lungs as oxygen is taken
in and carbon dioxide is forced out of his system, and other rhythmic movements of the organs of his body.

RHYTHMS is a term which denotes an aspect of a quality of movement that is sometimes thought of
as dance. When an individual move in response to a particular rhythm or music we call the movements
as rhythmic movements or rhythms. Structured forms which start creative rhythmic movements are
sometimes called rhythms.

RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES-- are the physical manifestations of the mental and emotional response
of the individual to rhythm. These are activities which a child responds to physically, socially, and mentally
to regular patterns of sound.

Everyone reacts to music or rhythm in one form or another. A head swaying, a foot tapping, fingers
snapping, shoulders and body moving while a musical piece is played are physical reactions.

DANCING. This means of expressing one’s emotions

through movement disciplined by rhythm. It is an act of moving
rhythmically and expressively to an accompaniment. The word
“dancing” came from an old German word “danson” which
means to “to stretch”. Essentially, all dancing is made up of
stretching and relaxing.

DANCE. This refers to movements set to music where there

emerges organization, structure, and pattern. It is a composition
that implies arrangement of parts into form.
