PROCEDURE SPECIFICATIONS
This prequalified welding procedure specification was developed in conformance with AWS
D1.1/D1.1M:2020 Structural Welding Code – Steel. It is the responsibility of the user to verify its
suitability for any application. For this prequalified welding procedure specification to be valid
and used in production it must be approved and signed by the engineer in charge or another
authorized company representative.
As stated in the commentary section C-5. Prequalification of WPSs of the AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020,
“The use of prequalified joints and WPSs does not necessarily guarantee sound welds.
Fabrication capability is still required, together with effective and knowledgeable welding
supervision to consistently produce sounds weld.”

IMPORTANT: Read these notes before using (or changing) these prequalfied WPSs
1. AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 Structural Welding Code (Steel) allows the use of prequalified welding
procedure specifications. However, one can be in full compliance with the code and still have
welds that do not meet the acceptance criteria. It is the responsibility of the user to determine
if the prequalified welding procedure specification is suitable for the work to be performed.
2. These prequalified WPSs may be changed if the changes comply with the requirements of AWS
D1.1/D1.1M Structural Welding Code - Steel. Any changes should be in the form of a new
Prequalified WPS which should note the revision number. This revision should also be approved
by the engineer in charge or other authorized company representative. A blank WPS form is
provided in Annex A for use in writing new or revised prequalified WPSs.
3. The prequalified WPSs contain notes that specify additional requirements. These requirements
come from Table 5.1 of AWS D1.1 (2020) – Prequalified WPS Requirements. Any changes to these
prequalified WPSs must comply with the requirements of Table 5.1
4. Preheat and Interpass temperatures required by these prequalified WPSs may be too
conservative for certain materials. You can always check Table 5.8 of AWS D1.1 – Prequalified
Minimum Preheat and Interpass Temperature to see if lower temperatures may be used.
5. Some of the variables in these prequalified WPSs are expressed in ranges rather than single
values. These ranges comply with the allowances of the code. Therefore, the welding parameter
(amperage, voltage and travel speed) may be displayed in 2 to 4 different ranges rather than a
single range. The key is to maintain a voltage that is adequate for the selected wire feed speed
and a travel speed that will provide the adequate weld size.
6. Travel speed ranges are provided in these prequalified WPSs. A range of amperage may have a
large range for travel speed. This is because the travel speed depends on the desired size of weld.
Use sound judgment when determining your travel speed. It is important to know that a travel
speed that is too fast or too slow for a given weld size may result in weld discontinuities.
7. These prequalified WPSs are for Groups I and II only, as specified in AWS D1.1/D1.1M Structural
Welding Code – Steel. A list of these Group I and II Approved Base Material for Prequalified WPSs
is provided in Annex B.
8. Certain sections of these prequalified WPSs contain abbreviations or acronyms. Below is a list of
what you may see in the WPSs.
Unl. – Unlimited
Ar – Argon
CO2 – Carbon Dioxide
N/A – Not applicable
1F – Fillet weld in the flat position
2F – Fillet weld in the horizontal position
1G – Groove weld in the flat position
2G – Groove weld in the horizontal position
in – Inches
mm – Millimeters
F – Flat
H – Horizontal
OH – Overhead
V – Vertical
R – Root
S – Weld Size
r – Radius
DCEP – Direct Current Electrode Positive
DCEN – Direct Current Electrode Negative
10. Prequalified joint details are provided by these prequalified WPSs. There are many more joint
configurations allowed by AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2020 Structural Welding Code – Steel. Additional
joint details may be found in Figures 5.1 through 5.6 for non-tubular connections and figures 10.5
through 10.8 for tubular connections.

If fillet welds are used in statically loaded structures to reinforce groove welds in corner and
T-joints, these should be equat to T1/4, but need not exceed 3/8 in [10mm]
For corner joints, the outside groove preparation may be in either or both members, provided
the basic configurations is not changed and adequate edge distance is maintained to support
the welding operations without excessive edge melting.
For corner and T-joints the corner orientation may vary from 90˚ to less than or equal to 170˚
provided the groove angle and root opening are maintained, and the angle between the
groove faces and the steel backingis at least 90˚
