LEARNING DURING COVID-19
By Mary Joy T. Liwag
According to UNICEF data, more than 1 billion children are at risk of falling behind due to school closures
aimed at containing the spread of COVID-19. To keep the world’s children learning, countries have been
implementing remote education programs. With school closures, many of them are exploring alternative
ways to provide continuous education using technologies such as Internet, TV, and radio. However,
access to these technologies is limited in many low and middle-income countries, especially among poor
households.
“Ma’am, kayat ko koma maki-online ngem awan kwartak paggatang load.” ( Ma’am I wish I was
able to attend our online class but I don’t have money to buy load). This is just one of the situations of
students in schools as they embrace the so-called “new normal” in education. Despite efforts of the
education sector to continue learning during the pandemic, the “new normal” has continued to be a
scourge not only for teachers but also for students. The sudden transition brought by the pandemic
without adequate opportunities to design a new medium led to the ineffectiveness of education.
On the teachers’ side, the migration creates a quagmire of problems despite the battery of seminars for
adjustments. Still, internet connection remains the number one problem. Additionally, the same problem
arises as module-making and course packs become a struggle. Modules and course packs don’t replicate
the actual teaching. I think teachers are highly appreciated in our country because of this realization. This
only shows the gaps in learning during COVID-19.
